  • Is there formal procedures regarding Accident reporting involved on the estate?

  • Have there been any Serious Harm Injuries? (If yes, how many, when and provide a quick summary).

  • Have any Serious Harm Injuries been reported to the HSE via RIDDOR.

  • Have any Near Miss or Injury incidents been reported? (Check Incident Register and there should be completed reports for each incident).

Risk Assessment

  • Is there an up-to-date Hazard Register in place? (Hard copy or electronic, evidence of a review in the last six months).

  • Have any new hazards been listed? (E.g. Has the Hazard Register been customised for the property, have new and estate specific hazards been added).

  • Have any hazards been reviewed or added as a result of an Incident Investigation? (Review Hazard Register).

  • Are Risk Assessments involved within the estate? Are they specific to tasks being undertaken onsite?

  • Have all staff been suitably inducted on Risk Assessments?

COSHH

  • Is there a current and completed Hazardous Substance Register in place?

  • Are there any Safety Data Sheets (SDS) in place? (These should be in a folder near to hazardous substances).

  • Are chemicals stored safely? (Look for bunding, correct spacing, labelled containers)

  • Is the correct PPE available and used? (E.g. Gumboots, waterproof apron, splash proof googles, face shield, vinyl gloves, respirator)

  • Is there adequate signage at entry points to the chemical storage area? (E.g. Warning, Ag Chemical sign, PPE Required, restricted area).

  • Is there a current approved handler of Pesticides on site? (View card or certificate)

Staff Competence

  • Have employees been inducted into health and safety requirements and is there a signed Induction Record?

  • Are there regular meetings with employees where health and safety is discussed? (There should be minutes of meetings, meetings should be held at least monthly).

  • Has training been carried out to help manage Significant Hazards? (E.g. Argo, Quad Bike, Tractor, Chainsaw etc).

  • Is employee competency reviewed? (E.g. have they demonstrated competency in key areas).

Contractors

  • Are there formal procedures involved in the Estate regarding vetting if Contractors are competent or not?

  • Is the Contractor's health and safety performance monitored? (Is this monitoring recorded?)

  • Have Contractors carrying out high risk work provided a Project Specific Safety Plan? (smaller Contractors may use the Farms Processes / Documentation).

  • Is Casual Labour involved on the estate? Is there evidence that casual employees have been inducted into health and safety? (This includes ensuring they are competent to carryout the duties they are engaged to do).

  • Have all Contractors been inducted into the Estates hazards and emergency procedures?

  • Does Insurance provisions for the Estate have adequate coverage for Sub Contractors / Casual Labour?

  • Is there a sign-in book for visitors and Contractors? Do the Estate Lone Working Procedures involve Contractors working on the Estate?

General Vehicle Safety

  • Are all vehicles that travel on the public road currently registered? (E.g. 4X4s, All Terrain, Trailers, Cars).

  • Are all vehicles regularly serviced / This included vehicles used to transport Clients / Beaters around the estate ?

  • Do drivers of vehicles have appropriate licenses? (E.g. 4X4, Car, etc)

  • Are all vehicles clean, in good condition and serviced regularly? (E.g. Is it serviced by an approved agent on a regular basis, has it got mud or straw in the motor, is there a lot of leaking oil or grease, is it dirty, is the cab full of dirt).

  • Are the vehicles fitted with a Fire Extinguisher? (This should be a minimum of a 2.5kg Dry Powder and must have a current Test Tag showing a test within the last 12 months, is it fitted or rolling loose).

  • Are the vehicles fitted with an up-to-date First AId Kit?

Tractor / Farm Tele-handler Safety

  • Is the tractor(s) / Telehandlers Registered / Licensed?

  • Does it have a current number plate?

  • Does it have a beacon fitted? (This should be fitted for travelling on the public road in low light conditions).

  • Does the PTO have a safety guard?

  • Are all tractors / telehandlers clean, in good condition and serviced regularly? (E.g. Is it serviced by an approved agent on a regular basis, has it got mud or straw in the motor, is there a lot of leaking oil or grease, is it dirty, is the cab full of dirt).

  • Are the tractors / Telehandlers fitted with a Fire Extinguisher? (This should be a minimum of a 2.5kg Dry Powder and must have a current Test Tag showing a test within the last 12 months, is it fitted or rolling loose).

  • Is there evidence the seat belt is worn? (Required when working on steep country, or when there is a risk of roll over or sudden stopping).

All Terrain Veichles / Quad Bikes

  • Are staff trained in the safe use of all terrain vehicles ( LANTRA / NPTC Awards)

  • Are All Terrain Vehicles used on the Estate? ( Hagglands / Kubotas /Argo Cats / Quads)

  • Doo the All-Terrain Vehicles get regularly serviced and maintained accordingly? Is there documentation to prove this?

  • Are there Helmets available for all bikes/riders? (Are they in good condition and do they get worn?).

General Farm Machinery and Equipment

  • Do PTO operated equipment / implements have PTO shaft covers? (E.g. Telescopic plastic sleeve)

  • Are guards fitted? (E.g. Guards protecting belts, cogs, pullys).

  • Is the equipment clean and in good condition? (E.g. not full of mud, clean, grease points greased, blades in good condition, etc)

  • Are hydraulics in good condition? (E.g. No leaking oil, O-rings are ok, hoses are in good condition)

  • Are personnel trained in the equipment / implement's use? (Check training record, question manager and employees)

Forestry Work

  • Do Forestry Contractors work on the Estate? Do they provide Risk Assessments and Certificates of Competence for the Work / Machinery they do and use?

  • Are Chainsaws used on the Estate by Staff? Do Staff have access to correct PPE?

  • Have Risk Assessments been conducted for Forestry work involving Chainsaws etc? ( Do they conform to FISA Guidance)

  • Are staff trained in the use of Chainsaws ( NPTC Tested) Has the training been completed in the last 5 years?

Employee Health

  • Do employees undergo any health checks? (E.g. Hearing, Eye Sight, Lung Function)

  • Is there any health related information available for employees? (Health eating, drinking etc)

  • Is sunblock provided to employees?

  • Is the drug an alcohol policy used / followed? (E.g. When employing new employees)

  • Are all estate workers briefed on Lymes disease and what role Ticks play in spreading the disease?

Estate Buildings

  • Are the farm buildings in good condition? (E.g. Offices,Storage implement shed, chemical storage)

  • Is electrical equipment (e.g.chiller units) plugged into the mains electrically tested and does it have a current tag?

Dwellings

  • Are the dwellings in a good and tidy condition?

  • Are the dwellings fenced to ensure the security of children (Particularly near roads, lanes, driveways, effluent ponds, etc)

  • Is there a working smoke alarm installed in the dwellings?

  • Is there a suitable Fire Extinguisher installed in each dwelling? (tested and tagged in the last 12 months)

  • Is there a suitable and up-to-date First Aid Kit in each dwelling?

Farmyards, Lanes, Bridges

  • Are the lanes in good condition? (e.g. Well drained, hard surface, lack of mud)

  • Are the bridges in good condition? (Solid surface, side rails where there is a drop of more than 1m)

  • Have any bridges been certified by an engineer? (If yes, to what weight?)

  • Are all Overhead services on the estate identified regarding the risk of vehicles coming into contact?

Safety Signage

  • Is there any safety signage on public entries to the property? (E.g. No Unauthorised Access, Report to...)

  • Is there any Safety Signage to high risk areas? (E.g. Chemical Storage / Grain Silos)

Electrical Safety

  • Are there Lock Out / Isolation procedures in place? (Check main switchboard, chillers etc)

  • Are all electrical appliances tested and do they have a current Test Tag?

Fire Prevention and First Aid

  • Has a Fire Risk Assessment been carried out for Offices / General Public dwellings etc

  • Are there Fire Extinguishers in high risk areas? Work Shop, Tractors, Houses,)

  • Is the correct signage erected for the type of Fire Extinguisher in place?

  • Have the Fire Extinguishers been tested / checked in the last 12 months?

  • Are there First Aid Kits in high risk areas? ( Work Shop, Vehicles, Offices)

  • Are the First Aid Kits up-to-date and checked regularly? (Check contents)

  • Are the First Aid Kits clean and tidy? (No straw or bird feaces on them, no bloody material in them)

  • Is ther signage indicating the First Aid Kit's location? (Green sign with white cross)

Animal Handling Facilities

  • Are there stock yards? (Cattle / Sheep Yards)

  • Are they well drained? (E.g. Concrete slab, no mud, water drains away)

Effluent Pond

  • Is the effluent pond near any buildings or easily accessible to the public? (E.g. near a house, shed, school).

  • Is the pond fenced to prevent children accessing the water?

  • Is the stone trap fenced to prevent children accessing the water?

  • Are the fences in good condition? (Strong posts, wire tight, gates well hung)

  • Is work carried out around the edge of the pond?

  • If yes, is a risk assessment carried out before starting work?

  • Can personnel escape if they fall in? (E.g. safety line or ladder in the corner)

  • If accessing a pump in the middle of the pond, are there safety procedures in place? (E.g. Is the pump secure? Is there a safe way to access the pump? Is the pump isolated when work is carried out?

Confined Space Entry / Working at Heights

  • Is work carried out at a height where a fall can cause injury? (E.g. Grain Silos, Installing High Seats etc)

  • Is there a safe working at heights procedure in place?

  • Are there Ladders on the Estate? Are staff trained in the safe use?

  • Are there High Seats involved on the Estate for control of Deer? (Condition of High seats, Warning Signage)

  • Is work carried out in Confined Spaces? (E.g. Grain Silos)

  • Is there a confined space entry procedure in place? (E.g. Safety line, ventilation, safety stand over)

  • Is there a Work Permit System in place? (One where employees or contractors working on high risk activities apply for a permit from the Farm Manager or representative before starting work)

Lone Working

  • Is Lone Working undertaken by staff on the Estate?

  • Is there formal procedures for Lone Working on the Estate?

  • Are Lone Working emergency response devices used on the estate? If so are they used and work in all parts of the estate?

  • Have staff been trained on Lone Working procedures and do they adhere to them?

Fire Arms

  • Are there any fire arms on the Estate? ( List who holds Shotgun / Firearm Licences)

  • Are there Estate Shotguns / Rifles used? Are they annually serviced?

  • Are the fire arms, bolts and ammunition stored separately in a secure place?

  • Does annual servicing of all the Firearms on the estate take place? Even if they are owned by staff or estate rifles?

  • Is Ammunition purchased or does Bullet Re-Loading take place regarding Firearms?

  • Are staff trained in weapon handling and shooting safety? ( College graduates / Experience / DMQL1)

  • Are all rifles moderated? Is PPE (Hearing defenders) issued and worn by staff?

General Shooting Activities

  • Are all guns briefed formally prior to a days shooting on risks and do's & dont's?

  • Is their provision on the estate of accompanying inexperienced guns on a shoot day?

  • What communication methods are used for shoot days? (two way radios / mobile phones etc)

  • Are gamekeepers briefed on risks and what to do on shoot days regarding emergency procedures?

  • Are first aiders / first kits available on shoot days?

  • Do all shooting activities on the estate have suitable risk assessments involved for each discipline?

  • Have all staff been briefed on Risk Assessments?

Deer Management

  • Is there a dedicated Larder / Chill onsite? Is it in a good condition also?

  • Is their provision within the Larder for carcass hanging? Is their also Mechanical / Manual hoist systems involved and adequate for carcasses put through the Larder?

  • Are knives etc. used within the larder? Are staff trained on correct lardering techniques and use PPE accordingly?

  • Are cleaning chemicals used in Larder? Are SDS ( Safety Data Sheets) Involved and all staff adhere to them regarding PPE provisions etc.

  • Are staff who control Deer on the estate competent (DMQL1 / L2)

  • Are paying Clients involved on the estate to control Deer?

  • Is their a Safety briefing given to clients who help control Deer on the Estate?

  • Are staff trained in weapon handling and shooting safety? (Experience / College graduates / DMQL1)

  • What form of extraction of the hill takes place ( All Terrain Vehicles / Pony / Manual)

  • Are staff trained in safe Manual Handling techniques?

  • Is there Emergency response procedures involved for either ( Lone working / Staff & Client emergency's on the Hill)

  • Are signs implemented on the estate to warn the general public that deer stalking takes place? Are the general public limited to where they can go when stalking takes place?

  • Are all stalkers / Gamekeepers briefed on lymes disease and what roles tick's play in spreading the disease?

Fishing

  • Are all Gillies / Boatman competent in what they do? And have risk assessments been involved within the estate on tasks they have to undertake?

  • Are all boats in good condition? Are floatation devices provided for boatman / fisherman when on the water?

  • Are all fisherman briefed on risks of wading in fast flowing water?

  • Are all Electrical power lines suitably identified regarding risks of casting close and coming into contact?
