2.0 - “Pre-start checks” (Primary visual inspection)

3.0 - Main Practical assessment

  • Practical assessment

  • The delegate is then told to travel travel to an area selected by the assessor.<br>Did the delegate travel to the area correctly without overly “spragging” or churning up the area, whilst maintaining good all round observation?

  • The assessor signals the delegate to stop and hold position, did the delegate stop and hold position until told to continue with the exercise ?

  • The delegate has been instructed to dig a trench 900mm in depth and 600mm wide. Did the delegate request the area be cat scanned before breaking ground?

  • Once the area has been scanned and is confirmed free of underground services the delegate is instructed to begin the digging exercise maintaining a straight and level trench.<br>Has the delegate maintained a straight level trench, ensuring clean and stable banks and all excavated material is clear of the “angle of repose” in a sealed mound?

  • The delegate is then instructed to backfill the excavated area.<br>Did the delegate backfill the trench in layers ensuring good compaction?

  • Lifting operations... as lifting is an essential part of the day to day tasks of an excavator operator. The delegate is asked questions regarding lifting accessories, types of lifts and swl. Did the delegate answer the questions correctly?

  • The delegate is instructed to shutdown the excavator.<br>Did the delegate shutdown the excavator correctly and disembark maintaining 3 points of contact?

  • Has the delegate showed they are capable of operating the excavator in a safe controlled manner?

4.0 - Maintenance

  • Delegate showing knowledge of maintenance process

  • Has the delegate shown the checked all fluid levels correctly?

  • Has the delegate shown all greasing points along with knowledge of how to maintain these points?

  • The assessor has asked the delegate “when should the excavator be topped up with fuel?” Did the delegate have the correct answer and did they know why it should be done at the end of every shift?
