Typically, this work is carried out by a single worker with basic tools and materials accompanied by a lookout person, Examples of this type of work include (but are not limited to): • Removal of obstruction or debris • Retrieving tools / equipment from the traffic side of a work vehicle parked on the roadside • Traffic investigation • Visual inspections, photos and video carried out by workers on foot • Pavement spotting and marking for repairs • Survey works • Set up and removal of temporary signs and devices

Additional Information

  • Traffic control Devices: Vehicle Mounted Warning device capable of being viewed from the start of the sight distance mounted as high as practicable on the vehicle. A vehicle mounted warning device must consist of one of the following options: 1. A single flashing yellow lamp • For emergency or other infrequent use on a vehicle not normally used for roadworks purposes Inspection Vehicle Plant item working within a work area. Engineers, Designers, Inspectors, 2. A pair of flashing yellow lamps • For use on work vehicles on all roads without the protection of a static work site. Positioned on the vehicle so that at least one (preferably both) lamps are visible to all road users from any direction, and Additional flashing lamps may be required to be added on the vehicle to ensure visibility is provided to all road users in any direction.   • Pre-installation Process: 1. This guideline must be read and forms the risk assessment requirements to undertake works under this clause, by signing this page you have agreed to comply with this guideline. 2. Hi-Vis clothing (Day or Night) available. 3. Pre-start checks have been completed for Traffic control devices. 4. If a TGS is provided, confirm the TGS has been signed off by relevant personnel, with a copy of the TGS onsite at all times during the works.

  • Installation: • Work between gaps in traffic does not require an approved TGS diagram when work is completed in accordance with the guideline. • A TGS may be developed and included in a generic TGS selection system for works between gaps in traffic activities.

  • Site Rules: • Prestart where applicable to be undertaken. (Stop, Think, Go / Environmental conditions) (Section 9/10) • The work vehicle is parked clear of moving traffic lanes or parked where parking could be legal, and the safety of other road users is not compromised. • Equipment or materials to be unloaded from the non-traffic side of the vehicle or the rear of the vehicle. • Preferred location of the work vehicle is adjacent to or on approach to the worksite in the primary direction of travel to the works undertaken. Vehicle is to be parked on the verge approximately 3m from seal edge. • The vehicle mounted warning device Must be on at all times while working in an accordance with this clause. Exception to this rule is if the vehicle is not in a position to warn road users. (Advance signage may be required) • When using a lookout person, Maximum distance for escape from roadway is 3.5m • When using Variable message signs, they should be installed 40m prior to worker's position.

  • Closeout process: • Daily records – Devices, signs and sight distance used must be captured in a diary. Signed pages of this Guideline must be recorded into the Document Management System (DMS No.______/___________) • In the case of incidents (for example, crashes, collisions), the actual type, size and location of signs and devices in use at the time of the incident must be recorded and the site layout and sign arrangement photographed for subsequent reporting. Details of the actual width and condition of the travelled path and weather conditions must also be recorded.
