Purpose of Task

  • The purpose of this assessment is to allow the student to demonstrate basic horsemanship skills such as riding a horse and preparing a horse for work using basic methods and procedures. The student must be able to prepare horses for work, select and maintain equipment for riding, monitor and anticipate horse behaviour when riding and recognise and report hazards or movement. Students are expected to be able to ride horses that are suitable for beginning riders and novice handlers, but they can be of any type or breed used for riding and stock work. Students are also required to check, muster and move livestock on horseback as a part of this unit.

  • Context: In the space below instructor is to provide an outline of the context in which assessment will be conducted, including the type and temperament of horses used and the species or breed of livestock checked, mustered and moved as a part of riding horses for stock work.

1. Identify and confirm requirements for horse riding activities for stock work? Must satisfy all of the following

  • Identified requirements through written or oral instructions

  • Confirmed how upcoming horse riding work with stock fits within organisations production and/or management plans

  • Confirmed horse(s) for riding, feed and equipment required

  • Forms of communication that will be used during horse riding (vocal / radio / mobile / satellite phone)

  • Confirmed livestock to be checked, mustered and moved, including where livestock are to be mustered to and location of any planned rest stops

2. Recognise existing and potential hazards associated with planned horse riding activities. Must satisfy all of the following

  • Recognises a variety of actual or potential hazards associated with horse riding for stock work, including at least 5 of the following

  • Zoonoses

  • Hazardous substances

  • Handling horses – hazards associated with falls or injury from horses

  • Handling livestock

  • Hazards arising from facilities such as broken rails, damaged gates and fences

  • Exposure to extreme weather (e.g. heat, wind, cold)

  • Isolation / risk of breakdown / getting lost

  • Sunburn / dehydration

  • Discusses risks associated with identified hazards with supervisor / instructor to identify ways to eliminate or reduce risks to acceptable levels during horse riding

5. Ensure adequate fresh water and feed were made available to the horses? Must satisfy all of the following

  • Any left-over feed from previous feed is removed and disposed of according to the workplace requirements and conditions

6. Groom horses before and after riding to maintain coat condition and health? Must satisfy both of the following

  • Discussed any concerns identified with horses during grooming with supervisor (if required)

  • Present at least 2 diary records. Diary records can be completed using provided diary forms, or can be photocopies from personal or standard workplace diary formats, but must include the following as a minimum:

  • Date

  • Written by student accurately and legibly

  • Where (location riding occurred, e.g. property etc.)

  • What livestock were moved and where they were moved to, that is the paddock / location at the start and the destination

  • Supervisor or instructor for that day

  • Time in saddle required to perform horse riding tasks

  • Time of day work performed

  • Horse identification (e.g. Name / brand)

  • Signature of student

  • Signature of instructor or supervisor verifying diary as accurate record of events)
