Ramp Preparation

  • Is PPE being used by all employees and 3rd parties including, where applicable, special PPE for toilet service (i.e. gauntlet gloves, apron and face shield)? (GHM 3.9)

  • Is a thorough FOD check carried out before the aircraft arrives? (GHM 3.8)

  • If there are icy/snowy conditions, is the stand clear of ice, snow or de-icing fluid which may cause vehicles to skid?

  • Is all ground support and loading/unloading equipment (including steps) checked for serviceability prior to use? (GHM 3.13)

Aircraft arrival

  • Is the marshaller using correct equipment (i.e. Day-Glo bat or gloves during daylight hours or lit wands at night) and marshalling as prescribed in the references?<br>(UK CAP 637. Overseas, ICAO Appendix 1 to Annex 2 Rules of the Air)

  • Do personnel wait until the aircraft has stopped and anti-collision lights are turned off before approaching, chocking and coning the aircraft? (GHM 3.14)

  • Do all vehicles stop 5 meters away from the aircraft and then proceed at speeds less than 5kph with the assistance of a marshaller? (GHM 3.16)

Ground Equipment Positioning and Serviceability

  • Are aircraft steps fitted with rubber protection on the front of the top platform? (GHM 3.18.1)

  • Are steps positioned correctly, not in contact with the aircraft, with brakes applied, stabilizers deployed and hand safety rails in place? (GHM 3.18.1)

  • Are air-bridges in their neutral parking position until the aircraft has come to a stop in the correct place on the stand? (GHM 3.11.2)

  • Are air-bridges fitted with rubber protection (or similar) on the front, which is positioned against the aircraft body? (GHM 3.18.2)

  • Is the air-bridge equipped with an alarm or mechanism to adjust the air-bridge to the settling of the aircraft during disembarkation, embarkation, fuelling and loading? (GHM 3.18.2)

  • Are Hi-loaders / Transfer loaders / Ambu-lifts fitted with rubber protection (or similar) on the front of the top platform? (GHM 3.18.3)

  • Is the Ambu-lift (Hi-loader at military locations) positioned 20cm lower than the doorstep of the aircraft unless handling containers or disabled passengers? (GHM 3.18.3)

  • When using a belt loader, is the belt in the down position (including rails) on initial approach to the aircraft, and when positioned correctly, are the stabilizers deployed or the vehicle chocked if stabilizers are not fitted? (GHM 3.18.4)

  • Do agents refrain from walking, standing or sitting on moving conveyer belts? (BEST PRACTICE)

  • When positioning ground equipment, is a guide person used at all times where the equipment operators’ line of sight is impaired or restricted? (GHM 3.18.4)

  • Are vehicles and equipment fully serviceable, buffering in good condition and cabs free of FOD? (GHM 3.18.6 )

  • If an air start unit is provided, is it positioned at least 5m away from the No.1 engine to ensure it does not infringe the danger zone? (GHM 3.17, 3.18 and 3.35)

Passenger Handling, Unloading and Loading Process

  • Do safe lanes exist for emergency passenger evacuation should it be necessary? (GHM 3.18)

  • Are the correct loading/offloading procedures used to prevent inadvertent tail tipping? (GHM 3.10)

  • Do ramp personnel refrain from walking between dollies and trailers? (BEST PRACTICE)

  • Are ULDs (including pallet nets and restraining straps) inspected for serviceability prior to use and immediately upon arrival? (GHM 3.20)

  • Are passengers informed of delays and kept updated on a regular basis even if nothing changes? (GHM 4.1)

  • Are passengers adequately supervised during on/offload and prevented from walking under wings/fuselage, near engines or the refueling zone? (GHM 3.22.3.3)

Fuelling Operations

  • Has the fuel bowser got a clear exit path? (GHM 3.30)

  • Are all ground servicing employees aware of emergency fuel cut-off systems and safety zones? (GHM 3.30)

  • During fuelling, is a bonding cable used, a dead-man’s handle held by the operator and the fuel safety zones kept clear with staff refraining from using mobile phones, hand held radios etc? (GHM 3.30)

  • If fuelling with passengers boarding or onboard, are at least two of the cabin exits kept clear of obstruction and the ground beneath these exits kept clear for emergency evacuation? (GHM 3.31)

  • If fuelling operations take place whilst passengers are aboard (including embarkation / disembarkation), are cabin doors continuously manned by a member of the aircraft crew? (GHM 3.31)

  • Is suitable fire extinguishing equipment available on the aircraft parking area? (GHM 3.31)

  • During the refuel process, do ramp personnel ensure that the use of naked lights is prohibited, radios, radio telephones, pagers and the operation of switches on lighting systems (other than those intrinsically safe) is forbidden and passengers monitored for the same restrictions during boarding and deplaning? Anti / De-Icing Operations

  • Are all aircraft doors, windows and panels closed with steps and ground handling equipment removed before de-icing operations commence? (GHM 3.28.2)

  • If snow is present, is most removed using a softly bristled brush taking care not to damage the aircraft skin or vortex generators? (GHM 3.28.2)

  • Are all areas cleared and treated equally in accordance with the diagram contained in AS.4001 whilst avoiding the areas listed? (GHM 3.28.2 and 3.28.4)

  • Is the PIC notified of completion of anti / de-icing operations and that all treated areas are free of contamination (if they are suitably qualified to do so)? (GHM 3.28.6)

Aircraft Departure Preparation and See-Off

  • Does the GHA obtain permission from the cabin crew to remove steps and then remain at the top of stairway until the door is closed and locked before removing the steps? (GHM 3.22.3.2)

  • Do the cones remain in position until all vehicles are clear?<br>(GHM 3.33)<br>
