  • During your 6 day training and pass out you will undertake a number of practical exercises to enable you to put the theory of the learning into practice.

    Use this document to record your progress and completion of each element of the training. You can record each task as:

    Completed
    Completed with Assistance
    Unable to Complete

    There is also a space for you to record your own notes for each task and you can also upload photographs to help your progress.

    There will be time at the end of the training to enable you to revisit the elements of the practical training that you feel you need more practice with, so keeping an accurate record of your progress is essential.

    At the end of the training you will require to complete a competency assessment so it is essential that you are comfortable with all processes.

Health and Safety/PPE

  • IN LINE WITH HEALTH AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU USE ALL OF YOUR OWN SAFETY EQUIPMENT PROVIDED DURING YOUR TRAINING. YOU SHOULD NOT UNDERTAKE ANY SAFETY CRITICAL TASKS UNSUPERVISED THAT YOU HAVEN'T YET BEEN TRAINED ON.

  • You must ensure you wear your hi-vis jacket, safety shoes and glasses & hard hat where required.

DAY 3 - Checklist 1 - TRAIN WALK ROUND - EXTERIOR CHECK

  • Rear of the train - Visual check from platform only
    • Check that the bi-folding gangway door is closed/locked
    • Check that the tail lights are illuminated
    • Check that the high and low voltage connectors are stored in the dummy receptacles
    • Check that the (B14) Brake pipe isolating cock is closed
    • Check that no exterior covers are left open
    • Check that the coupler locking pin is in the stored position

    Side of the train – Visual check from platform only
    • Check that the (B15) main reservoir isolating cock is closed on the rear coach
    • Check that no Not to Be Moved boards are attached to the train
    • Check that no Emergency Access Devices (EAD) are operated
    • Check that brakes or distributors are not isolated on any coach
    • Check that the parking brake is not isolated on any coach
    • Check that the coach numbers match the information on the Train List
    • Check that the (B15) main reservoir isolating cock is open on other coaches

    Inter vehicle connection – Visual check from platform only
    • Check that tail lights are extinguished on intermediate coaches
    • Check that all inter-vehicle electrical jumper connections are connected correctly
    • Check that no exterior covers are left open
    • Check that the (B14) Brake pipe isolating cocks are open

    Loco - coach connections/Front of train - Visual check from platform
    • Check that tail lights are extinguished on front coach
    • Check that bi-folding gangway door is closed and locked
    • Check that low voltage connectors are in dummy receptacles
    • Check that high voltage connectors are attached between loco and coach
    • Check that the (B14) Brake pipe isolating cock is open
    • Check that the Brake pipe and main reservoir pipe isolating cocks on the loco are open
    • Check that the 61-way jumper is connected from loco to coach
    • Check that the Dellner coupler is engaged and that the locking pin (if available) is in the verified position
    • Check that the stroke indicator is still in place

  • 1. Fold up and down luggage shelf
    2. Open and close luggage shutters
    3. Open and close blanket store
    4. Open and close electronic locker
    5. Operate Accessible Coach lighting controls
    6. Use the Accessible Coach sink
    7. Open and close the desk table in Accessible room
    8. Operate the fittings in the Sleeper Coach en-suites

DAY 3 - Checklist 4 - COACH START UP

  • Coach Start-Up
    Pre-start checks
    > Loco is supplying ETH
    > Seated coach at end of rake
    > Club Car is in the rake
    > Loco switches in each coach in correct position

    REMEMBER: battery start up can be done from ANY coach but set up can only be done from the TM area in the seated coach.

    1. Turn battery switch to on, hold for 3 seconds
    2. Press light switch if required
    3. log-in to ASDO in Train Manager restricted mode
    4. Accept formation and set running direction (if all OK and move to step 7)
    5. Click to edit formation if necessary
    6. Edit the train formation, accept composition
    7. If running direction matches actual direction press as shown
    8. If running direction does not match, press reverse
    9. Accept Train formation and running direction

    NOTE: If Loco type NOT auto selected:
    Select controls tab
    Select ETH
    Select Loco type

    10. Select lighting tab, switch on lights
    11. Set up PIS
    > Select route from the list
    > Before starting route, remove any stations from “Via Stations” list using “Skip Station”
    > Select “Start Route”
    12. Check formation and coach letters are correct in Train Layout tab
    13. Checks:
    > all screens display the correct train formation and coach lettering
    > Check TCMS (Alarms screens) for any alarms
    > Check the PA system is operational
    > Check all interior doors are operating correctly

DAY 3 - Checklist 5 - ASDO (AUTOMATIC SELECTIVE DOOR OPERATION)

  • ASDO Operation

    • Edit the Loco

    • Edit the train formation:
    • > add a dummy coach
    • > remove a dummy coach

    • Change the running direction

    • On the approaching screen:
    • > check the next station
    • > carry out an ASDO station override
    • > carry out a coach override
