    Potential Hazard: Unstable saw bench, uneven ground / slippery surface under foot, debris off cuts, slips, trips & falls

    Controls: Ensure saw & bench are stable, ensure fences & extensions on bench are adequate for the lengths of timber to be cut, get assistance to hold long lengths. Ensure the surface underfoot is clear of debris, check guard is operating correctly.

    Potential Hazard: Hands can be too close to saw blade jamming of saw blade, saw dust in eyes, noise & timber moving during cut.

    Controls: Ensure all pencil marking is done away from the blade, set saw for any angle cutting & ensure all clamps & adjusting screws are tight. Consider what you are going to do with the work after each cut. Arrange a place for stacking, consider what you are going to do during the cut. What will your movements be will you need to change position, where will your hands be.
    Will the off-cut need to be supported. Work should be hard against the bench at the cutting point, bow and / or spring will govern the way work is placed on the bench.

    Potential Hazard: Flying obstacles from blade splinters caught in guard

    Controls: Before pressing start button, make sure you are standing to one side of the saw blade, be ready to stop saw. When you are satisfied that the blade is clear to run without problems, start the saw.
    Pay attention to the saw until you are satisfied that it is running properly (is the sound usual).

  • Job Step: Make the Cut

    Potential Hazard: Severe cuts, loss of fingers eye injuries, bruises and abrasions from flying off-cuts

    Controls: With one hand, hold the largest part of the timber firmly on the bench and against the rear fence, make sure your hand is no closer than 150mm to the blade, stance should be relaxed but alert and to one side of the blade. Operate the saw with firm steady pressure, speed should not be fast, the faster the operation – the greater the chance of the saw biting. When the saw has passed completely through the timber it has to be brought back to its resting position. Be aware of what has happened to the off-cut (it may be in the way of the blade as it goes back) Keep pressure on the work until the blade is back to its resting position, the on/off switch should then be put in the off position, keep one hand holding the work until the blade stops running (check guard is down, need to clear away work & off-cut). Do not pass hands under the blade while it is running.

    Controls: Where possible the placement of structural grade or aluminium planks adequately supported across their spans to be used to transport trusses into position, ensure first truss is adequately braced before erecting the next truss. Ensure when transporting trusses across roof area that contact is maintained with the truss at all times. Do not lift trusses over others which have been erected. always work from one end, standing main truss first and working within each truss as it is being erected. When fixing or moving trusses to outside plates, all work to be undertaken from scaffold, If scaffold can not be placed then trestle and planks or industrial ladders may be used for this procedure. External walls, where balconies continue outside, and in between the perimeter scaffold a plank may be used to transport and erect a truss onto the pitching beam or plate.

    Controls: Separate moulding out of packs, team lifting when required training and manual handling, use of P.P.E equipment such as safety glasses or goggles wear loose, comfortable clothing, long-sleeved shirts and trousers are recommended when cutting to prevent skin irritation, wash with mild soap & water, do not scratch or rub the skin if it becomes irritated, avoid a build-up of dust and keep storage and work areas well ventilated, avoid sparks and sources of ignition in all electrical equipment, hand power tools should be fitted with dust bags and used in well-ventilated areas, a class P1 or P2 replaceable filter or disposable half face-piece respirator should be worn when cutting or machining.

    Controls: 3 points of contact ie 1 foot and 2 hands or 2 feet and 1 hand must be maintained at all times whilst on the ladder, when on a ladder the user must be facing the ladder at all times. Always ensure that the ladder is positioned to avoid overreaching from the ladder, all work should be in easy reach to avoid overbalancing and subsequent falls. No more than one person shall be on a ladder at any time. Any tools or equipment to be carried up the ladder must be in a backpack, tool belt or other means to ensure that the user’s hands remain free. Prior to getting on a ladder the user must ensure that their shoes are fully enclosed and free of mud, grease or other contaminants that would make the shoes slippery.

Tie or secure long hair, secure loose clothing, keep loose clothing / hair clear of drill when in operation. Wear appropriate safety glasses / goggles where there is a risk of foreign objects entering eyes, when drilling above the head use of a catcher may be used to catch falling swarf or dust, when drilling into masonry above the head a dust mask should be worn. Keep a firm grip on the drill whilst in use, use 2 hands whilst drilling deeper holes, ensure item to be drilled is firmly in place to prevent it spinning and causing injury, ensure that hearing protection is used whilst drilling when necessary, some items when drilled will make excessive noise, the user should determine the need for hearing protection with each application

    Controls: Consider purchasing a gas cartridge powered gun (ie. this type eliminates the trip hazard of the air line). Be aware while moving across the roof the airline does not get caught on the roof structure and pull you off balance, be aware of the airline so that it does not become a trip hazard to you or others, be aware of the airline to ensure it does not knock tools or equipment off the roof onto others below.
