Involve stakeholders
Determine the audit topic
Plan the delivery of audit fieldwork
Identify evidence-based standard
Specify audit criteria or measurable statements of what should be happening
Set targets or expected performance levels
Agree on acceptable exceptions (if appropriate)
Carry out a short pilot of the data collection method
Collect accurate, timely, and representative data
Analyze data
Draw conclusions
Present results to department/division
Share audit report
Review areas for improvement and agree on priorities for action
Identify appropriate interventions
Develop quality improvement plan (if required)
Identify persons responsible for each task/action and a reasonable timescale for completion
Determine how and when progress will be measured
Ensure that change is supported by those with the necessary authority to effect such change
Monitor implementation of changes
Report on the progress of implementation as required
Re-audit to ensure changes have improved practice and decide if further audit procedures are required
