  • Is the external shutter controlled by a key box?<br>If so, is it covered and not easily accessible?

  • Check the CCTV to ensure there is 2 colleagues present when opening and closing the store. Engage with the shift leads if this isn't the case and understand why not.

  • Engage with the shift lead to understand whether perimeters walks being completed to identify any damage to the store and that it’s being reported correctly if anything is found?

  • Check the back gate and door, are they open and accessible? Is the yard/car park adequately lit? Engage with the shift lead to establish alarming and lockdown routines around these areas

  • Do colleagues use the back door for entry/exit? If so, speak to 3 colleagues and understand what they are doing to ensure they leave safely i.e. using the spy hole to check before opening or carrying a panic alarm?

  • With your shift lead, check the process for when high value stock arrives at store, does stock get left unattended at the back door?

  • Are Spirits securely locked in 4 sided cages with a lid? Are all other high value items stored in a secure lock up?

  • Check that Tobacco is being stored securely in the tobacco safe and that all processes and timings for working tobacco are being followed.

  • Check the safes, are they closed and securely locked?

  • Are shift leaders aware of how to use the CCTV system and GDPR disclosure book if Police want CCTV footage? Is the CCTV system locked down when not in use?

  • Is the self-service area being correctly observed and monitored? Talk to colleagues about how they ensure self-serve is monitored appropriately.

  • Is there a robust process for key control and handover, in particular store keys? Check the process for clear audit trails and ensure key holder details are up to date.

  • Is the access to Lottery / Health Lottery or Pay point terminals secure? By engaging with colleagues, gather ideas on how we can make it more secure.

  • Are great guarding principles in your store being followed? If there are any concerns, have these been reported to the area manager of the contract guarding company?

  • If relevant, is the security guard wearing their body worn camera? Talk to them about how they feel having that piece of equipment and the difference to their personal safety.

  • If door guarding systems have been installed in your store, are they activated? Talk to colleagues about the impact this has had on their personal safety and if they know how it works.

  • If relevant, are all colleagues and security guards wearing their Safe Guard personal panic alarms and trained how to use it? Ask 3 colleagues about the equipment – why do they wear it, how do they use it?

  • Talk to colleagues about panic buttons, are they aware where they are and when they should be used? If they're faulty, has this been reported to maintenance to be fixed?

  • Where installed, is the smoke cloak equipment working? Has it been reported and logged correctly if faulty?

  • If your store has cash or tobacco GPS trackers, ask colleagues why you have them and whether they know which item is the tracker. Is it located at the front of the till or gantry for easy access?

  • Are till routines being completed correctly and frequently? Check a till for the amount of money – would it attract attempted till snatches?

  • Do you have sufficient cover in your store at the most vulnerable times?

  • Have all colleagues completed their protecting my personal safety' training modules? Engage with your colleagues about the training, what were their key learning points?
