Purpose

  • To provide simple step by step instructions on the safe operation of the circular saws used at Cornerstone Timberframes.

Required Items

  • Safety Glasses

  • Hearing Protection

  • Steel Toe Boots

  • Battery or extension cord

  • Dust mask (N95 or better)

Hazards Present

  • Exposed Blade-Cuts, Amputation

  • Electrical Shock

  • Noise

  • Sawdust/Projectiles in Eyes

  • Sawdust Inhaled (possible toxicity)

  • MSI- Back/Wrist Injury

Procedures

  • Read and Understand The Operators Manual for the tool you are using. This SOP aims to simplify the manual into step by step instructions. It does not include all the information.

  • Don PPE, Tie up long hair, remove loose clothing and jewelry

  • Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.

  • Ensure the tool is dry and the cord and plug are in good condition.

  • Remove the battery and ensure the tool is not powered

  • Inspect the tool for any loose guards or screws.

  • inspect the blade for wobble or missing/dull teeth.

  • If the tool needs a new blade get someone who is competent to change it and fix any other issues

  • Ensure the lower blade guard functions smoothly and is not jammed

  • Understand what kick back is and how to prevent it.

  • Understand the potential hazards of the area and workpiece

  • Make sure the blade bevel is at the correct angle for your cut

  • set the correct blade depth - for a regular through cut this is around 1/4" or the depth of the gullet

  • Plug in/install the battery of the tool, start the saw- check for blade wobble

  • Use both hands on the handles, use clamps for securing smaller pieces. Keep hands away from blade

  • Cut your material with firm footing and clear view of the blade. Be alert for conditions which could cause a kickback.
