Coupling Procedure: (Please do not distract the driver when observing. This may heighten the risk of a coupling failure if done so)

  • Driver checked surrounding area for hazards, pedestrians and other vehicles?

  • Driver applied park brake before exiting prime mover (maintaining 3 points of contact)?

  • Driver checked the turntable, king pin and jaws for any damage before coupling?

  • Driver ensured there was no air gap before attempting to reverse / complete the coupling?

  • Driver reverses until the trailer and prime mover connect, you should hear the jaws close with a click?

  • Driver completed the first tug test?

  • Driver applied park brake before exiting prime mover?

  • Driver checked to ensure that the coupling release handle is in the locked position, that the secondary locking tab is in the locked (vertical) position (Jost JSK 37), locking yoke shaft is fully in (Holland) and there is no gap between the turntable and trailer skid plate?

  • Driver climbed under the trailer and using a torch, or vehicle mounted light, to visually check that the jaws are locked around the king pin?

  • Driver raised the landing legs and secured the handle, with gear engaged in low range? (Electronic legs must be fully raised before next step).

  • Working from the ground or using walking plates and 3 Points of contact, driver connected air and electrical cables turning the locking mechanism ¼ of a turn? (Gloves are worn?)

  • Prior to re-entering cab, driver retraced steps to ensure all tasks have been completed correctly?

  • Driver completed a second tug test at stationary position?

  • Driver completed a third and final tug test while moving but under 5kph?

  • If the driver was distracted during this process, was the process physically started from the beginning once the distraction ended (not just mentally)?

UN-COUPLING PROCEDURE: (please do not distract or approach the driver when uncoupling. This will heighten the risk of incident if done so)

  • Driver checked for hazards, pedestrians and other vehicles?

  • Driver applied park brake before exiting prime mover?

  • Working from the ground or using walking plates and 3 Points of contact, driver disconnected air and electrical cables? (Gloves are worn)

  • Landing legs lowered with weight of trailer taken up by the legs and handle secured? (Electronic legs must be lowered to ground before next step).

  • Driver releases turntable jaws by unlocking the handle and pulling out until the handle is locked out? Driver uses correct manual handling principles? (Shoulder not over-extended)

  • Prior to re-entering cab (using 3 points of contact), driver retraced steps to ensure all tasks have been completed correctly?

  • Did the driver lower the airbags prior to clearing the skid plate of the trailer (once clear – return airbags to ride height)?

  • If the driver was distracted during this process, was the process physically started from the beginning once the distraction ended (not just mentally)?

  • Any further comments?

  • Name and signature of auditor
