  • General Safety Information for Die Grinder:
    This outlines the safe operation of an : Die Grinder
    This is designed so Bechtel can give direct instructions on the safe use of an: Die Grinder
    This CTO is for use when it is expected that person under direct hire with Bechtel will yes an
    Die Grinder as part of their normal work duties and can be used/included as part of an Induction
    or Training skill set. It is also to verify that a person has the competency to operate an Die Grinder
    after completing the nominated task/s on this CTO.

    This Competency To Operate (CTO) will include:
    -Pre-Start Checks
    -Job setup
    -Personal Protective equipment
    -Testing and Operating Angle Grinder
    -Shutting Down Angle Grinder
    -Disc Replacement.

  • Any areas of incorrect or potentially unsafe demonstration or use were discussed with employee who then exhibited correct/safe understanding/demonstration

Action to be Assessed Pre-start checks-The employee

  • Checks the use of the reverent Die Grinder is within scope of approved JHA and tool is suitable for thee task.

  • Checks the Die Grinder for current test tag.

  • Checks for defects damage to casing or lead of Die Grinder

  • Checks the handle is fitted (as required)

  • Checks guard is secure and in proper position.

  • Checks Tool has no defects and is correct Tool for the type of work to be carried out( eg. Burr ,stone or flapper)

  • Determines correct Tool for job and checks RPM of Die Grinder and Tool for compatibility.

  • Can locate the stop/start switches/bottoms and dead mans switch(if applicable )

  • Carries tool correctly

  • Checks condition of hoses /connections and ensures whip connection tight (Air powered)

  • Checks inline air filter/oiler and top up as needed (Air powered)

  • Any extension leads to be used are not damaged and current test tag fitted.

  • RCD is tested as per site procedure.

  • Knowers correct procedure for tagging out defect/damage is discovered.

Set-up _ The Employee

  • Completes risk assessment and hot work permits requirements (as required) are finalised and authorised.

  • Checks surrounding area for any plant, equipment, vegetation, flammable liquids, other workers that could be affected.

  • Ensures that the proper fire extinguisher, hose, blankets etc are readily available.

  • Area clear of obstacles/trip hazards.

  • All necessary PPE is available.

  • Job/work piece to be worked on is secured and glamped.

  • Appropriate screens ,barricades etc are erected.

PPE-Employee

  • Is the wearing the correct PPE for the task e.g. Has double eye protection ,hearing ....etc

  • PPE is suitable for the wearer (correctly fitted) and other in the area.

  • Loose clothing ,hair etc is secured.

Testing and Using-The employee:

  • Ensures switch is in the off position before connecting to power source.

  • Die Grinder is held with two hands using the handle (where possible ).

  • Purges air hose and air discharge away from others

  • Starts Die Grinder and runs with no load for a short period at full speed to ensure wheel/disc is not damaged/flawed.

  • Starts grinding only after disc is at full speed.

  • Ensures a balanced, defensive stance and not over reaching.

  • Demonstrates control whilst grinding.

  • Uses Die Grinder effectively and dose not overload Die Grinder or Tool by excessive or uneven force

Shut down and storage-The Employee

  • Checked Die Grinder has fully stopped prior to placing face down and/removed face shield.

  • Purge all air hoses and air discharge away from others (air powered by running tool until it stop)

  • Die Grinder is isolated correctly prior to replacing Tool.

  • Checks condition of Die Grinder and associated consumables prior to storage to ensure that it is in a serviceable condition.

  • Area is left in a safe condition.
