  • The following is the ICSD Server Group checklist for decommissioning a server (in general the items are listed in the order they should be implemented):

  • Notify/communicate with current/prior owners/users of server to let them know it will be decommissioned and to determine if imaging/archiving of server is necessary before decommissioning

  • Remove any SolarWinds Orion monitoring of the server

  • Power down server

  • Image/archive server if deemed necessary

  • Delete servers DNS entry

  • Delete servers TSM client node and schedule (or arrange for eventual expiration of them if the server backups need to be kept awhile)

  • Delete firewall rules associated with server

  • Notify TSB to decommission all IP addresses associated with server (be sure to include any TSM Backup LAN IPs as well)

  • PHYSICAL SERVER ONLY:

  • Notify TSB to decommission all switch ports associated with server

  • In the SG file share folder structure move the servers information folder into the Archives

  • folder (G:\TSSB_Server_Group\System Administration\Hardware Lists and Info\Server Info\Archives\Individual Server Config Info)

  • In the SG SQLite DB of server info delete the entry for the server

  • PHYSICAL SERVER ONLY:

  • In the ?SG Rack-Server-Switch-Port Mapping? spreadsheet update the entry for the server (i.e. put unassigned for IP addresses server name etc.)

  • VM ONLY:

  • If there is an entry for the VM in the vCenter Chargeback system delete the VM from vCenter Chargeback

  • Notify ICSD CST to remove server from their automatic Foundstone scans and from their Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) management console as appropriate

  • Ensure server is removed from server patching lists/services (i.e. WSUS for Windows servers Red Hat Network for Linux servers)

  • VM ONLY:

  • Delete VM files

  • SAN-ATTACHED PHYSICAL SERVERS ONLY:

  • Delete virtual disks on SAN that were associated with (presented to) this server and if server will no longer be attached to SAN at all disconnect fibre channel cables b/w server HBAs and SAN switches followed by removing server HBAs from zoning on SAN switches

  • Send out e-mail to ICSD SG confirming that server decommissioning has been finished
