Action on site
-
Carries out checks to establish the number of customers being supplied and isolates ECV prior to
disconnection
-
Uses the Voltstick prior to undertaking any work on any exposed metalwork to ensure it is safe to
continue and repeats when necessary
-
Carefully removes the plug / cap from the service tee in case the integral plug / stopper is not fitted
-
Lowers the integral stopper to the bottom of the tee if one is fitted. If there is no integral stopper then
the service must be cut of in accordance with the current SGN procedure
-
Checks the integral plug / stopper for leakage using SGN approved leak detection fluid and replaces the
plug / cap on top of the service tee
-
Follow for disconnection of PE service
-
Disconnects the service pipe as near to the tee as possible using damp cloths draped over the section to
be cut out and ensures the ends of the cloth are in contact with the ground. Caps downstream
(property side) pipe with an electrofusion cap end

-
Loosens the service tee on the main taking care to restrict leakage to a minimum
-
Centralises the drilling machine over the tee, fits carrier spindle and removes the tee under controlled
gas conditions. Withdraws the tee into the canopy and closes the gate valve
-
Attaches a mains plug onto the carrier spindle and plugs off the main under controlled gas condition
(tapered plugs must not be used)
-
Removes the drilling machine from the main, tightens the plug and tests for leakage using SGN
approved leak detection fluid
-
Removes the old service including the existing stand pipe and service entry from the property. Makes
good all redundant holes and any damage
-
Question - What action should be taken if it is not possible to remove the standpipe?
-
Answer - The underground entry must be capped off to prevent the ingress of gas at a later date and the standpipe
labelled accordingly with (SGNB608) -
Seals any abandoned service pipe ends in the ground using suitable caps
-
Checks properties to confirm that all supplies have been isolated
-
Follow for disconnection of metallic service
-
Removes wrapping from the service pipe at two places where cuts will be made, approximately 300mm
apart and cleans pipe
-
Fits a temporary continuity bond (TCB) across section to be removed ensuring that the pipe where the
TCB is to be clamped is clean and wired brushed to a bright finish to ensure a good electrical contact
-
Wraps the pipe with a suitable denso tape / mastic bandage prior to cutting
-
Dons breathing apparatus complete with associated PPE
-
Cuts through the pipe using a hacksaw ensuring that the cut piece (approx. 300mm) can be easily
removed
-
Removes the cut section of pipe and caps downstream (property side) pipe with an approved cap end
-
Disconnects the continuity bond from the service and disconnects the pipe from the outlet of the
service top-tee
-
