Administrative Safety Compliance

Loading Dock Safety

  • Is an effective procedure in place to prevent the truck driver from pulling away from the loading area while the forklift operator is loading the trailer? (Dock-lock system, Red Light- Green Light, Designated area for drivers to stay until loaded, Paper system requiring driver to sign paperwork prior to departure)

  • Are tire chocks provided and used by truck drivers or forklift operators to stabilize the back tires of trailers when being loaded/unloaded?

  • Do dockboards have the load rate capacity marked and in clear view of the forklift operator?

  • Do dockboards have stabilizers to secure the dockboard in place and prevent movement when forklifts enter/exit the trailers?

  • Are dockboards equipped with handholds to prevent injury to the employee's hands when manually moving the dockboard?

  • Do dockboards have run-off protection to prevent the forklift from running off the dockboard edge?

Fire Safety - Portable Fire Extinguishers

  • Have all portable fire extinguishers been mounted and located for easy visibility and use?

  • Have all portable fire extinguishers received an annual maintenance check from a reputable third party vendor?

  • Have all portable fire extinguishers received a monthly visual check which is documented on the back of the tag?

  • Have all PIT operators received classroom instruction on the safe operation of the PITs?

  • Have all PIT operators been observed during a practical exercise operating the PITs to ensure that they operate the PITs in a safe manner?

  • Is a 3' clearance maintained in front of all electrical breaker boxes and disconnects?

Electrical - Extension Cords and Electrical Cords

  • Are all extension cords and electrical cords effectively grounded? (ground pin intact)

  • Is the insulation on the extension cords and electrical cords in good repair without any splices or damaged areas?

  • Are all electrical cords to equipment, to include fans, properly grounded with a three prong plug and cord?

  • Are extension cords approved for their location use? (Wet locations, chemical, etc.)

  • Are extension cord sets used as fixed wiring?

  • Are extension cord sets run through walls, under doors, nailed to the wall, or in any other way exposed to potential damage?

  • Are all electrical conductors in approved conduit?

  • Are all electrical extension cords and electrical cords equipped with proper strain relief to prevent cords from being pulled away from the plugs?

Electrical - Duplex Outlets and Switches

  • Are all duplex electrical outlets equipped with faceplates to prevent contact with live electrical conductors?

  • Do all electrical switches have faceplates to prevent contact with live electrical conductors?

  • Are all duplex electrical outlets properly grounded or the GFCI type outlets?

  • Are all duplex outlets in areas that are wet or likely to be wet the GFCI type outlets? (Near loading dock doors, bathrooms, break areas, near water fountains or handwashing areas)

Battery Charging Areas

  • Are "no smoking" signs prominently posted in all battery charging areas?

  • Is an appropriate eyewash and shower installed and available within 10 second access from all battery charging areas?

Machine Guarding

  • Are abrasive wheel bench grinders equipped with a top guard (tongue guard) to prevent broken abrasive wheels to be ejected out at the employee?

  • Are abrasive wheel bench grinders equipped with a lower guard (work rest) to prevent the abrasive wheel from grabbing the item being sharpened?

  • Are abrasive wheel bench grinders equipped with flange guards to cover the side and rotating nut?

  • Are all fan guards equpped with fan guards that have openings no greater than 1/2"?

Means of Egress - Exits

  • Are all exits properly labeled with appropriate signage and illuminated when necessary?

  • Are all exits and exit routes free of obstructions to provide safe exit from the building?

  • Are all exits kept unlocked when employees are occupying the building?

  • Are all hazards, such as but not limited to, chemical storage, combustible materials, etc. kept away from the exit routes?

  • Do all exits terminate to an area outside that allows employees to distance themselves from the building? (not fenced in or leading to a courtyard)

Ergonomics - Preventing Sprains/Strains
