Job Role of Staff being Observed.

Arms bare from the elbow down, with no jewellery/watches (plain wedding band acceptable).

Nails are Short and Varnish Free.

Cuts are covered with a waterproof dressing.

Five Moments for Hand Hygiene

Hands Cleaned before touching a patient.

Hands Cleaned before Clean/Aseptic Procedure.

Gloves used for a Sterile Procedure.

Hands Cleaned after Body fluid exposure.

Hands Cleaned after Touching a Patient.

Hands Cleaned after Touching a Patient Surroundings.

Hand Washing Technique

Posters displaying steps to effective hand washing by each sink.

Hands washed with water and soap following correct steps for 20 seconds. Alcohol-based handrub used if no immediate access to soap and water.

Hands dried thoroughly (ideally with disposable towel), or allowed to evaporate if using handrub.

Tap turned off with elbow or clean disposable towel.
