Ladder use

  • Are the ladders suitable for this type of work?

  • Are ladders in good condition (no apparent bent, cracked or missing rungs etc)

Step ladders

  • Are they the right type and class of ladder?

  • Are they on a firm and level base?

  • Are they fully extended and locked in?

  • Can work be reached comfortably without standing any higher than the third top rung?

Scaffold

  • Is the design and erection appropriate?

  • Are all components in good condition?

  • Is it erected on a solid base

  • Is there evidence of safe use?

  • Does it have appropriate labels (such as scafftags etc) that have been completed and inspected as per RAMS?

Modular scaffolds

  • Are Wheels locked while in use?

  • Are all vertical and horizontal bracings fitted?

  • Are all handrails and kick boards fitted?

  • Freestanding scaffold height not more than 4 times the base width (for stationary towers within buildings) or 3.5 times (for mobile towers or stationary towers adjacent to buildings)

  • Have all the authorisation forms been completed to allow the contractor to use?

  • Is hearing protection being worn if noise makes conversation difficult?

  • Is high vis clothing being worn when working in high traffic areas such as service yards or car parks?

  • Are dust masks being worn when sanding, sweeping, grinding etc?

Protection of the public

  • Are all public safety measures that are required in place?

  • Are works carried out within stated times?
