  • SITE SAFETY MANUAL PRE-DEMOLITION CHECKLIST

  • GENERAL

    - Before starting demolition check the following:
    - Condition of the foundation walls, & floors
    - Utilities shut off
    - Other conditions or equipment that could effect health and safety
    - keep standpipe and sprinkler systems in place as long as possible.
    - Properly shore structures that have been damaged before starting manual demolition.
    - Properly dispose of any potential hazardous materials in tanks, pipes, etc. Before beginning demolition.
    - Start manual demolition at the top of the structure and work down, one level at a time.
    - Clear loose materials from the structural supports as you proceed downward.
    - Do not work under a floor opening if demolition is being conducted on the level above, unless it is protected by a solid 42" barricade located at least 6' back from the edge of the opening above.
    - Inspect the demolition site on continuing, daily basis for any type of safety hazards. Take the necessary corrective measures before continuing to work.
    - A Pre- Demolition Survey must be completed and kept on the job site until demolition is completed.


    FLOOR & WALL OPENINGS

    - Guard all floor and wall openings with 39" to 45" guardrails or cables and at least 4" toe-boards. Fall protection and floor covers meet the requirements of MIOSHA Part 45.


    MEANS OF EGRESS

    - Use only a safe, designated route to enter or leave a structure under demolition. All other egress routes must be closed off.
    - The safe egress route must be protected from falling material.


    MATERIAL CHUTES & DROPS

    - Protect material drop openings and areas below with 12" high barricades placed at least 6' back from the opening at each level. Place signs warning of falling materials on each barricade.
    - Material drops in excess of 40' inside a building must be completely enclosed.
    - Enclosed chutes may have a 48" high opening at each level to insert materials. This opening must be closed when not in use.
    - When dropping material from mechanical equipment or a wheelbarrow, a 4"x6" toe-board or bumper must be secured to the floor at each chute opening.
    Material drops in excess of 20' outside the building must be completely enclosed to within 8' of the ground.

  • Before the start of demolition operation a general survey of the structure and equipment must be conducted by an authorized person knowledgeable in demolition. Keep survey until the completion of the project.

  • All above items have been considered?

  • Condition of the roof walls and floor is sound?

  • There are not any adjacent structures that will be affected by the demolition?

  • The demolition area has been checked for hazardous material?

  • Utility companies have been informed of the planned demolition?

  • Utility services that affect the demolition have been shut-off, capped, or otherwise protected from damage?

  • Glazed sash, doors, and other glass that could cause an injury have been protected or removed?

  • Are there any other conditions and equipment affecting the safety of the workers that needs to be considered?j
