  • Location
  • Survey the location for driving hazards, especially those hazards that can contribute to backing accidents and those associated with “pulling out of a parked position”. Look for equipment such as environmental well casings or low electrical boxes that may be hard for drivers to see. Look for traffic flow and parking patterns that may make it easy for a driver to have an accident. Also, consider the dynamics of a location when construction projects and maintenance projects cause a change in traffic patterns. When hazards are identified, take appropriate actions to correct them. For example, remove abandoned equipment, cut off environmental well casing at ground level, install tall poles by low profile hazards so that they can be seen even in the “blind area” of vehicles, arrange traffic flows and parking areas to minimize the need to back and to reduce risks during backing.
