Pre-operational checklist

  • Are the operators fit for duty and free from the effects of alcohol and drugs?

  • Is the boat properly licensed and registered?

  • Has the boat been thoroughly inspected, including the underside, engine bolts, and critical structural components, before being placed in the water for its first use?

  • Has a documented pre-op safety inspection been completed?

  • Does the operator possess a valid boater safety card and been properly trained in the operating procedures?

  • Are the occupants aware of the emergency procedures if an incident occurs?

  • Verify that wind, weather, and tide condition forecasts have been checked and monitored and changes communicated to operators in the field

  • Are loads centered and low; stowed to prevent shifting with heavy items placed on the bottom and light items on top?

  • Verify pre-trip navigation routes and names of people on the trip are being submitted prior to every trip

  • I have verified that operators have enough fuel to complete their round trip

  • Does the hull show any damage, cracks, or signs of leaks

  • Is there a properly fitted Personal Floatation Device (PFD) / Life Jackets for each person on the boat

  • Quantity on board

  • One Buoyant heaving line or lifebuoy at least 15m long is present

  • One anchor with 15m rope is present

  • Boat plug in place and spare onboard?

  • Re-boarding device if freeboard is great than .5 meter

  • One watertight Flashlight with spare batteries

  • First Aid Kit is stocked and no out of date items are present

  • One 5BC fire extinguisher (fully charged) and inspection tag is current

  • One bailer or manual bilge pump is present and functional

  • One manual propelling device (oars) is present

  • Sound Signaling Device is present

  • Correct number and type if flares for size of vessel (if operated more than 1.8km from shore) are present

  • Navigation Lights (if operating before sunrise, after sunset, or reduced visibility like fog or snow) if outfitted are operational

  • Magnetic Compass is present

  • Motor securely mounted and safety cable attached

  • Automatic shutoff device is being used, is operational, and tested

  • All occupants have extra clothing/foul weather gear
