  • Is the shop generally orderly, with trash or waste materials disposed of correctly?

  • Are waste containers emptied regularly?

  • Are oily rags and combustible refuse disposed of in covered metal containers?

  • Loading/delivery area(s) clean, free of tripping hazards?

Slips, trips and falls

  • Are floor surfaces even and uncluttered?

  • Are entry and walkways kept clear?

  • Are walkways adequately and clearly marked?

  • Are intersections kept clear of boxes and other tripping hazards?

  • Are floor surfaces free of liquid spills?

  • Are footpaths in good condition?

  • Is all fall protection equipment visually inspected prior to use?

  • Is all work above 4' done safely with fall preventive measures?

Manual Material Handling

  • When possible, mechanical lifting devices (forklifts, hoists, cranes, and block and tackle) are used.

  • Manual lifting and carrying devices (dollies, hand trucks, pry bars, and hooks) are available and in good condition.

  • Heavy materials which must be lifted manually are stored off the ground, no lower than knee height.

  • Heavy materials are stored where there is enough space to lift them safely without reaching or twisting.

  • When possible, jobs are designed to minimize manual material handling?

  • Workers have been trained in safe lifting techniques.

Hand and Power Tools

  • Are there damaged hand tools in use?

  • Are there damaged power tools in use?

  • Are tool guards in place and operable?

  • Are power cords in good condition?

  • Are tools double insulated or have a ground plug?

  • Are ground fault circuit interrupters in place that the source of electricity?

  • Are defective pieces of equipment and tools red tagged and removed from services?

  • Are tools stored correctly when not in use?

General Machinery

  • Are there maintenance schedules in place for machines?

  • Are relevant pre-start inspections being completed on machinery or equipment?

  • Are machines maintained clean?

  • Are machine guards in good condition?

  • Where appropriate, are there drip pans on floors to prevent spillage?

  • Are noise levels controled?

  • Is there sufficient room to use all machines safely?

Ladders

  • Are ladders inspected monthly?

  • For extension ladders: are ropes, pulleys, and treads in good condition?

  • If observed, are ladders being used according to instructions?

  • Are there any loose steps/rungs?

  • Are there any damages, worn or missing non-slip bases?

  • Is there oil, grease, or any other slippery material on steps/rungs?

  • Are there dents or bends in ladders rails or steps/rungs?

  • Are there cracked, split/broken uprights, steps/rungs?

Electrical Safety

  • Are there broken plugs, sockets or switches?

  • Are there power leads across walkways?

  • Are there any frayed or damaged leads?

  • Are leads under strain?

  • Where required are there emergency shut-down procedures in place?

  • Are lockout/tagout procedures in place?

Hazard Communication and Chemical Safety

  • Are safety data sheets (SDSs) readily available and accessible to workers?

  • Are all containers labeled correctly?

  • Are workers trained in the use of of hazardous substances?

  • Is adequate ventilation provided?

  • Are there eye washes and showers available and easily accessible?

  • Are there spill kits or other clean up arrangements available?

Incident, injury and emergency procedures

  • Are employees familiar with incident reporting and emergency procedures?
