  • Is adequate lighting for guard use provided on indoor routes?

  • Are materials and equipment in shipping and storage areas properly arranged so as not to mask security lighting?

Physical Security- Interior

Janitorial Services

  • Are flammable materials properly stored?

  • Are controlled access procedures in place for cleaning crews, contractors and maintenance personnel?

  • Is confidential trash properly disposed of to insure destruction?

  • Are office areas and equipment cleaned regularly?

  • Is the print room separate from the equipment room/printers not located near hard drives or CD-ROM drives?

  • Are paper, supplies and trash stored outside equipment areas, desktop locations, and computer rooms?

  • Utility steam pipes clean of asbestos?

  • Is there a no-smoking policy in the office/equipment rooms?

  • Is there a no eating or drinking policy near desktop systems or in the equipment rooms/computer rooms?

Guard Services

  • Does the facility employ security guards?

  • Are all security guards armed?

  • How many guards are assigned to each shift?

  • Is there a security guard posted near the front entrance of the building?

  • Are the guards trained in first aid?

  • Are the guards trained in fire control and prevention?

  • Are the guards trained in the legal aspects of apprehensions and detention?

  • Does the location employ a Director of Security? If so, identify:

  • Do guards patrol the premises?

  • Do guards stand at stationary posts (as opposed to sitting at a desk, chair, etc)?

  • Are there written “post orders” at every location where guards are stationed?

  • Are guards required to maintain daily activity logs?

  • Are the guards required to write reports or fill out specific incident report forms?

  • Does the security department or any other department of the company file reports and logs and/or maintain an index file or computerized record of said reports?

  • Are any statistics derived from the above logs and reports used in guard patrol mapping?

  • Does the security department employ thorough pre-employment background investigations prior to the hiring of guards (as well as other employees and contractors)?

If contract guards are employed:

  • Who in the company supervises the guards?

  • Are the guards' credentials checked by anyone in the company prior to allowing them to assume a post?

  • Does the contract service provide supervision (either through roving supervisors or on-site supervision?

  • Is the contract service licensed?

  • Is the contract guard service maintaining liability insurance or bonding?

  • Did any member of the guard company staff survey the company and make recommendations regarding security coverage?

Visitor Access Control

  • Are all visitors asked to sign in on any visit to the facility?

  • Are all visitors required to present a valid photo ID for positive identification before being allowed access to the facility?

  • Does the company maintain a log of all visitors entering the facility?

  • Are all visitors assigned temporary security badges?

  • Are visitors denied entry during non-business hours?

  • Does the company have a documented procedure defining the controls for visitor access to the facilities?

Key Control

  • Are locks employed on all interior and exterior doors?

  • Are all employees required to present identification upon entering the facility?

  • Does the company utilize an effective, employee ID system to control access? Employees should only be given access to those areas that are necessary for the performance of their duties.

  • Does the facility maintain a key cabinet for holding unused or unissued keys?

  • Does the facility have written procedures to control the issuance of keys?

  • Does the facility occasionally conduct a key inventory?

  • Do persons have to sign for keys when issued?

  • Is a record kept of lost or stolen keys?

  • How frequently and by whom are locks serviced?
