Safety Showers

  • Should there be a safety shower available? Safety showers should be available in each science classroom where corrosive chemical solutions are being used or prepared.

  • Is there a safety shower?

  • Is the safety shower clearly visible with signage?

  • Is the shower easily accessible and not blocked by classroom furniture, decoration or materials?

  • Is the actuator easily located, no higher than 69 inches above the floor?

Eyewash Stations

Chemical Fume Hoods

  • Is the air flow rate posted on the hood?

  • Is the working height of the sash posted (usually 18 inches)?

  • Equipment and materials do not obstruct air flow?

  • Is the hood interior clean, uncluttered, and not used as storage?

  • The hood is not used for chemical or waste storage?

  • Was the fume hood tested as part of this investigation?

  • Are flammable/combustible liquids stored in fire rated storage cabinets?

  • Are acids and bases stored in corrosion resistant cabinets?

  • Are chemicals stored by compatibility?

  • Are chemical containers properly labeled?

  • Are food products used in laboratories labeled “Not for Human Consumption”?

  • Are food containers not being used for chemical storage?

  • Are chemicals are stored below eye level?

  • Do chemical shelves have a lip edge to prevent roll-off?

  • Are chemicals not stored on the ground?

  • Is food being stored in a chemical refrigerator? Are chemicals being stored in a food refrigerator?

  • Is the refrigerator(s) labeled "Chemicals Only" of "Food Only"?

  • Are there no flammables being stored in refrigerators?

  • Are chemical wastes stored in proper containers and location?

  • Are all chemical wastes stored in properly labeled containers?

  • Are all chemical wastes stored by compatibility?

  • Is all waste stored in sealed containers?

  • Is chemical waste disposal done regularly?

Glassware

  • Is there glassware stored or used in the space?

  • Is glassware properly stored?

  • Is broken and damaged glassware properly disposed of?

  • Is a covered broken glass container provided?

Science Room Inspections - All Science Rooms

Emergency

  • Room exits are unobstructed and accessible.

  • Fire safety evacuation plans are prepared, maintained and conspicuously posted near the exit door in the classroom.

  • Emergency rescue windows are free of obstructing bars, screens, grilles, decoration or classroom equipment.

  • All emergency rescue windows are identified by signs as specified on the window and /or on any window shades, blinds, or curtains.

  • The window on the classroom door to the hallway should not be obstructed by paper or decoration

  • Safety blankets are available and wall mounted in a conspicuous location.

  • Fire extinguishers are be wall mounted in a conspicuous location, preferably near the door.

  • Fire extinguishers are be visually inspected monthly and marked on the inspection tag.

  • Fire extinguishers are visually inspected annually and marked on the inspection tag.

  • Spill kits are available and conspicuously placed.

  • There is a first aid kit available.

Housekeeping

  • Counters and floors are clean and free of clutter.

  • There is no food being consumed in laboratories.

  • Storage is orderly.

  • Storage is not within 24 inches of the ceiling.

  • Thirty-six (36) inch walkways are maintained.

Supplied Gas/Compressed Gas

  • There is an emergency gas shut-off valve or button.

  • The gas shut-off is labeled.

  • All cylinders (including extras) securely stored with valve protectors.

  • Corrosive gases stored no more than 6 months

  • Cylinders are marked FULL, IN USE or EMPTY

  • Cylinders are stored according to compatibility.

Electrical Safety

  • Electrical cords are in good condition.

  • There GFCI outlets within 6 feet of water sources.

  • There are no exposed, energized electrical parts.

  • Where electrical current is other than 110v, outlet marked with current provided

  • All equipment have three pronged plugs (or labeled “double insulated”) and are UL listed.

  • Electrical panels have 36" clear space.

  • Emergency shut off is operational, buttons are marked, overhead signage

  • Extension cords are not used as permanent wiring.

  • Power strips are plugged directly into the wall and are not used with any appliances.

  • Multi plug adaptors and ground pin adaptors are not in use.

Personal Protective Equipment

  • Appropriate eye protection is worn - goggles for splash hazards.

  • There is a method available to disinfect and clean eye protection.

  • Nitrile gloves are available for use with chemicals.

  • Appropriate clothing and footwear is worn when experiments are being performed.

  • Appropriate PPE is provided.

Hazard Communication

  • A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) - formerly a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) - is available for every chemical. An MSDSonline Poster is posted in a conspicuous location.

  • The Chemical Hygiene Plan is accessible.

  • Emergency numbers are posted in a conspicuous location.
