General Safety Operating Practices

  • Driver completes a VCR on all hostlers used?

  • Driver displays proper hostler mounting / dismounting technique?

  • Driver is free of distractions? No use of headphones, radios, cell phones, etc.

  • Hostler is clean and free of debris? No hard hats or other objects in the dashboard area?

  • I-Drive system (if so equipped) is active and not tampered with?

  • Driver is using Seatbelt whenever hostler is in operation?

  • Except during training, no riders observed in tractor while in operation?

  • Headlights are on at all times during operation?

  • Strobe light is on at all times during operation?

  • 4 ways (Hazards) are on at all times during operation?

  • When backing up driver ensures area is in the clear prior to making any reverse movement?

  • Driver does NOT back under units at a sharp angle?

  • Driver performs test pull on all units? Pull forward with unit brakes locked (stretch) to ensure 5th wheel jaws are securely locked.

  • Driver has sure footing and is standing on a level surface when hooking up airlines? NO slip, trip and fall items present?

  • Driver has both airlines connected?

  • Prior to movement of trailer, container or chassis, driver ensures that unit is fully aired up and brakes have release completely?

  • Driver obeys posted speed limits and traffic controls? (Stop Signs, Yields at crossing, Yields/Stops at the end of rows, right of way, live tracks, Any and all Rail Road Yard Rules, etc.)

  • Driver displays proper 5th Wheel Operation? (Correct Height given conditions)

  • Displays proper U-Turn Technique? (To be avoided whenever possible)

  • Driver NEVER drives under a piece of lift equipment and does NOT drive under any suspended loads?

  • Driver observes right of way as it pertains to live intermodal tracks? Does not occupy or operate near a crossing while intermodal track is "live"

  • Driver spots rail car correctly? Spotted to correct car # and well, not spotted in the foul (PUC lines), not spotted in crane foul, etc.

  • Before dropping unit, driver lowers 5th wheel, disconnects air lines, ensures unit is on a solid surface and slowly pulls away. There should be no observations of a driver bob-tailing with 5th wheel in the fully raised position.

  • Driver properly stows airlines and glad hands when not in use? Air lines and Glad hands are NOT to be left on the catwalk on the rear of the hostler.

  • Driver does NOT "double drop" units on intermodal tracks?

  • Driver when backing up a unit does NOT jack-knife unit into a parking spot?

  • Driver displays Defensive Driving techniques while operating hostler?

  • Driver does NOT drop units or chassis in unauthorized areas?

  • Driver backs in when parking tractor for breaks and/or end of shift.
