  • The following questions are aimed at identifying any possible non-conformances with current HSE legislation and site rules.

  • Are copies of completed Risk Assessments available for the tasks carried out in this area are they still valid?

  • Are the risk assessments signed off by all relevant staff?

  • Are all fire extinguishers and break glass call points easily accessible?

  • Can the Fire Alarm systems be heard clearly in the area?

  • Are Staff aware of the nearest eye wash bottle and is it within the use by date?

  • Are CoSHH assessments available for all chemicals used in the area and are they still valid?

  • Are all guards, which are supplied, fitted, in position and operating correctly?

  • Are all handrails, barriers and access platforms in a good, safe condition? NB. Check ALL items the area

  • Has all machinery and equipment (including portable equipment) been electrically inspected and tested?

  • Do all ladders/steps have a valid inspection label attached?

  • Have all items of lifting equipment been inspected?

  • LOTO kit has the equipment in it and the procedure has been followed

  • Is appropriate PPE being worn by all staff in the area? As mentioned in the risk assessments.

  • This list is intended to provide prompts for possible workplace hazards. Any other hazards spotted during the inspection should be noted and photographs attached if applicable.

  • Are flammable liquids and combustibles kept to a minimum?

  • Are legible safety signs displayed in prominent, unobstructed positions?

  • Are there sufficient and appropriate facilities and procedures for the disposal of waste from the area?

  • Is the lighting provided adequate and working properly?

  • Is the local heating and ventilation suitable and working correctly?

  • Are there any obvious defects from a visual examination of the plugs, cables, high-pressure hoses, drains, etc.?

  • Are chemicals appropriately labelled and stored correctly?

  • Are the truck chargers and charging cables for trucks used in the area in good condition?

  • Is there any evidence of current or previous spills?

  • Are the flammable liquid cabinets maintained in good order? Free of combustibles, e.g. rags, no open containers, door closes properly?

Employee Awareness

  • At least one employee who works in or uses the area should be interviewed to ensure they are aware of key site HSE information.

  • Who are the local first aiders?

  • How would you raise an alarm in the event of an emergency? (Fire, First Aid, Spill, etc.)

  • Where is the area risk assessment held and are you aware of its contents?

  • How do you raise any environment health & safety related issues?

  • Where is the fire assembly point?

  • Was there any other issues identified during the inspection.
