  • The following should take place prior to sailing or being assigned any shipboard duties

  • Learn the responsibilities of the position as defined in the vessel's Safety Management Manual

  • Received orientation of the bridge, all decks and the engine room

  • Reviewed the Muster List and understand your role in an emergency

  • Reviewed the Fire and Safety Plan

  • Received instructions on the location and operation of all fire fighting equipment, call points, fire extinguishers, smoke hoods, hydrants and hoses

  • Received instruction on the location and use of EEBD's (Emergency Escape Breathing Devices) on board

  • Received instructions on the location and operation of all lifeboats, life rafts, life rings and life jackets, EPIRB, SART's, VHF Radios and Pyrotechnics

  • Identify the muster stations, emergency escape routes and embarkation stations

  • Learn the alarm signals and how to raise the alarm for:

  • Fire

  • Abandon Ship

  • Man Overboard

  • Know alarm sounds for fire and watertight doors

  • Know how to close and manually operate fire and watertight doors

  • Locate medical & first aid equipment

  • Received instruction on the location and use of the vessel's Personal Protection Equipment

  • Received instruction on hazardous work restrictions and the Permit to Work system

  • Read and understood the Masters Standing Orders

  • Read and understood the Company’s Safety and Drug and Alcohol Policies

  • Know where to find Emergency contacts and how to contact DPA

  • Familiarization with own work area and responsibilities

  • Complete orientation task using vessel’s general arrangement drawing

  • Review the Safety Training Manual

  • Understand rules for garbage, waste and oil disposal

  • Locate and demonstrate understanding of use of pollution control equipment

  • Requirements for access control, receiving stores, baggage searches, security watches

  • Recognition of behavioral patterns of persons who are likely to threaten security and techniques used by intruders to circumvent security measures

  • Meaning and consequential requirements of different Security Levels

  • Use of security equipment and CCTV
