  • Scaffolding provides a means of working at height. However, erecting scaffolding can be hazardous in its own right, and the safety of the people using it depends on how it is design, erected and maintained whilst in place. There are codes of practice that cover scaffolding, including use of fall arrest equipment whilst it is being erected or altered

  • SCAFFOLDING CHECKLIST

  • During Erection

  • Is the scaffold being erected under the direction of a competent person?

  • Has site been evaluated for hazards (earth fills, ditches, debris, underground electric wires, unguarded openings) or hazardous conditions created by other trades?

  • Are there effective barriers or warning notices in place to stop people using an incomplete scaffold, e.g. where working platforms are not fully boarded?

  • Paperwork

  • Do we have a copy of handover certificate?

  • Is scaffolding scaff tag in date?

  • (A competent person must inspect the scaffold regularly at least every 7 days and always after it has been substantially altered, damaged and following extreme weather)

  • Are all inspections recorded?

  • Is the footing sound and rigid - not on soft ground, frozen ground (that could melt), or resting on blocks?

  • Has sufficient public protection been provided?

  • Is there sufficient control over vehicle movements and crane operations?

  • Is the scaffold braced or tied adequately?

  • (The scaffold secured to the building or structure in enough places to prevent collapse or be braced appropriately)

  • Has the scaffold been designed and constructed to cope with the materials stored on it and are these distributed evenly?

  • Is there adequate protection from falling debris?

  • Have all parts free from defects such as corrosion, bent or dented tubes?

  • Are all planks free of cracks, splits, knots, or damage?

  • Have all uprights been provided with baseplates, and where necessary, soleboards?

  • Are the ledgers level?

  • Are the transoms / putlogs secured?

  • Access

  • Is there a safe way to get on and off the scaffold, such as a ladder (without climbing on crossbraces)?

  • Is there access and egress to all working platforms?

  • Are any temporary stairways correctly installed?

  • Are portable ladders of an industrial grade (Class 1 or EN131), serviceable and correctly installed?

  • Working Platforms

  • Are there enough working platforms?

  • Are the working platforms suitable for the intended work (wide/long enough)?

  • Are the working platforms at the required location/height?

  • Are guardrails in place (top and intermediate) on all open sides of working platform?

  • Are toeboards in place on all open sides of working platforms?

  • Have all planks been properly secured to the scaffold?

  • Containment Sheeting

  • Has the scaffold been designed for wind loading on any containment sheeting?

  • Are the fixing ties secure?

  • Are there any rips or tears?

  • Are the overlap joints satisfactory?

Unsafe Scaffolding

  • Have you deemed scaffolding unsafe?
