Flood Affected Orchard Protocols

  • Has the harvest contractor and staff been made aware of the additional procedures required for harvesting flood affected orchards?

  • A) Ensure that you have processes in place to prevent the risk of cross contamination from orchard floor, silt, water etc. into harvest bins or onto harvested fruit. Management of silt on orchards is critical to prevent the risk of fruit contamination.

  • B) Good hygiene practices should be maintained at all times, including without limitation, good handwashing during breaks.

  • C) Ensure all staff are aware that picking bags are NOT to be placed on the ground.

  • D) Remind harvest crews that any fruit that is dropped during harvest cannot be picked up and must be disposed of (eg. squashed to avoid being eaten).

Flood Affected Area and Harvest Practices

  • Have flood contaminated areas of the orchard been clearly identified on the orchard map?

  • Is the load-out area free from silt and water?

  • Loading areas should be cleaned/cleared of any silt build up and where possible hosed clean. Loading areas should be allowed to dry and build-up of silt and soil brought onto the loading area from the orchard (on tyres etc.) during picking minimised.

  • Has all silt been removed from the orchard?

  • All standing silt should have been removed from the orchard, prior to harvest? If not, contamination-reducing practices are extra important (eg. bins off ground)

  • Have flood contaminated areas of the orchard been clearly identified and flagged?

  • Flagging tape to indicate the boundary of any flood damaged areas within a block (bay or bays).

  • Has contaminated fruit been removed ?

  • Any fruit deemed unfit for harvest, should have been removed. Take images of fruit on the ground if applicable

  • Are bins clean?

  • Ensure bins are clean prior to use. If bins have been in direct contact with flood water, then these bins should be cleaned prior to use.

  • Are bins above the ground in contaminated areas to avoid ground contact?

  • Bins should not come into contact with potentially contaminated ground. It is preferable to use standard bin trailers where bins remain on the trailer. If soft riders are used, it is preferable bins aren't laid out and stay on the trailer. Where bins are required to be placed on contaminated ground, bins should raised to avoid ground contact (eg. on timber lengths). Do not allow bins to come into contact with silt or water.

  • Are all vehicles travelling slowly to minimise contamination from splashes and dust on bins and fruit?

  • Vehicle Speed - slow to avoid contamination

  • Is all dropped fruit being disposed of to avoid being consumed?

  • Dropped fruit must not be picked up and should be squashed to avoid being eaten.

  • Are picking bags placed off the ground during breaks?

  • Picking bags should not be placed on the ground. (eg. inverted, unused bin, any raised, CLEAN surface)

  • Good hand washing facilities available?

  • Soap, water and towels
