Play area

Toys and Recreation

  • Is your craft equipment (scissors, crayons, pens, paper) safe for children?

  • Do you have cupboard and drawer locks to stop children from opening?

  • Do you have door jams or hinge protectors to prevent finger jamming?

  • Is alcohol stored and kept out of reach?

  • Are chairs and tables difficult to overturn?

  • Are cigarettes, ashtrays, matches and lighters out of reach?

  • Are hot drinks placed well out of reach of children?

  • Are fire places, fuel, stoves and heaters out of reach?

  • Are heaters kept away from curtains, furniture, clothes, toys or other flammable material?

  • Are electrical safety switches installed to prevent electric shock?

  • Have you removed any potentially poisonous house plants?

  • Have long cords been bound with twist ties? Are extra cords hidden?

  • Are there barriers or gates on steps, stairs, changes in floor levels to prevent falls?

  • Are all balcony entry points locked or are there gates to prevent access to balconies?

  • Are all climbing instruments (cots, chairs, etc) away from windows?

  • Is the furniture free of sharp corners? Have you got corner protectors?

  • Are electrical appliances kept out of reach?

  • Are electric blankets and hot water bottles not in use?

Pets

  • Are pet bowls and pet litter (kitty litter) kept out of reach?

  • Can the pets be kept/locked away during times of care (unless permitted by each family)

  • Is your home regularly sanitised due to your pets?

Bathroom

  • Does the floor have a non-slip surface?

  • Are sharp objects (e.g razors), kept in a locked cupboard or out of reach?

  • Are shampoos, chemicals, medicines & cosmetics locked and out of reach?

  • Are appliances (hairdryers, electric razors) stored away?

  • Have you installed door locks to prevent access to chemicals and other items?

  • Have you removed any ways children could climb onto higher surfaces?

Kitchen

  • If so, can you install a gate preventing access?

Laundry

Outdoors

  • Will the children be playing in the backyard, or in outdoor areas?

  • Is the outdoor area clean, tidy and free of dangerous objects?

  • Is the driveway a no play zone?

  • Are pesticides, paints, chemicals, tools and equipment locked away and out of reach?

  • Is the garden free of poisonous plants?

  • Can the shed or garage be locked?

  • Is the area free of drowning hazards? e.g ponds, pet water bowls, buckets?

  • Is your pool fenced and inaccessible to young children?

  • Is the play equipment stable, safe and in good condition?

  • Is there a soft surface under play equipment to cushion falls?

  • Are branches pruned above eye level to avoid eye injury?

  • Are there any spiky/thorny bushes which could hurt the child?

  • Are heavy items (garden statues/birdbaths) cemented/immovable to prevent crushing?

  • Are electricity sockets, light switches and powered equipment protected from the weather?

  • Is the sandpit covered when not in use?

  • Do you have a fence/gate that restricts driveway and street access?

  • Is the driveway a 'no-go' zone?

  • Where will you put medicines of a particular child?

  • Where will you be diapering your child? Non-porous surface, etc - far away from food preparation area.
