Manual Requirements and Inclusions

General Requirements

  • The outdoor cooking gas appliance shall be accompanied by clear and concise printed instructions and diagrams, stated in terms clearly understandable to the consumer and adequate for proper field assembly, installation, maintenance, safe use, and operation.

  • Safety related items are prominent and precede any instructions of functional use

  • A note must be present to inform an installer to leave the instructions with the unit for the consumer

  • A note must be present to instruct the consumer to retain the instructions for future use

  • The front cover OR first page contains the following 12 pt boxed warnings:

  • Are both danger and warning signs present?

Warnings and Statements

  • A statement that the installation must conform with local codes or, in the absence of local codes, with either ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54, CSA B149.1, or CSA B149.2, or ANSI A119.2/NFPA 1192, and CSA Z240 RV Seriesas applicable

  • If an external electrical source is utilized, a statement that the outdoor cooking gas appliance, when installed, must be electrically grounded in accordance with local codes or, in the absence of local codes, with NFPA 70 Canadian Electrical Code, Part I

  • Instructions to the effect that this outdoor cooking gas appliance shall be used only outdoors and shall not be used in a building, garage, or any other enclosed area

  • A statement following the previous sentence that "An appliance is considered to be outdoors if installed with shelter no more inclusive than with walls on three sides, but with no overhead cover; all openings must be permanently open; sliding doors, garage doors, windows, or screened openings are not considered as permanent openings"

  • AND/OR "An appliance is considered to be outdoors if installed with shelter no more inclusive than within a partial enclosure that includes an overhead cover and no more than two sidewalls. The sidewalls may be parallel, as in a breezeway, or at right angles to each other; all openings must be permanently open; sliding doors, garage doors, windows, or screened openings are not considered as permanent openings"

  • AND/OR "An appliance is considered to be outdoors if installed with shelter no more inclusive than within a partial enclosure that includes an overhead cover and three sidewalls, as long as 30% or more of the horizontal periphery of the enclosure is permanently open. All openings must be permanently open; sliding doors, garage doors, windows, or screened openings are not considered as permanent openings"

  • Statements must be accompanied by Annex D illustrations for outdoor area requirements and depictions thereof.

  • Are all illustrations included?

  • A statement that this outdoor cooking gas appliance is not intended to be installed in or on boats. For other than RV grills, a statement that this appliance is not intended to be installed in or on recreational vehicles

  • Manufacturer’s, distributor’s, jobber’s, or dealer’s name, as it appears on the name plate; and address and outdoor cooking gas appliance model or series number

  • Explicit information specifying the necessity for maintaining proper clearances from combustible construction, the specific minimum clearances from such construction to the sides and back of the outdoor cooking gas appliance

  • Directions for proper assembly and for assembly of field installed parts and accessories supplied with the outdoor cooking gas appliance, and proper procedures for gas leak testing.

  • Explicit information on the importance of properly locating the burner with respect to the orifice and instructions on how to verify the proper installation

  • An instruction to inspect the hose before each use of the outdoor cooking gas appliance. If it is evident that there is excessive abrasion or wear, or the hose is cut, it shall be replaced prior to the outdoor cooking gas appliance being put into operation. The replacement hose assembly shall be specified by the manufacturer. If removal of an access plate(s) or opening of a door(s) is required for this inspection, proper instruction shall be provided on how to gain access for inspection;

  • When a flexible service cord is provided to connect the outdoor cooking gas appliance to a line voltage electrical supply, the intent of the warning statement specified in Clause 4.26.12 and the statement: "Keep any electrical supply cord and the fuel supply hose away from any heated surfaces"

Operation

  • Lighting instructions and control operation, including pictorial representations

  • Maintenance instructions that include the following

  • Are all instructions present?

  • Information for obtaining replacement parts and where they are obtainable

  • The minimum ambient operating temperature for safe use of the appliance shall be stated. The suitability of this statement shall be examined by the testing agency with respect to the listing of the gas carrying components utilized

  • A statement that the outdoor cooking gas appliance must not be used under overhead combustible construction

  • Information that shows the specific size and capacity (pounds) of the gas cylinders to be used

  • Illustration(s) depicting the cylinder mounted to the appliance utilizing the cylinder retention means and the points of contact between the cylinder and the retention means

  • A statement that the LP gas supply cylinder(s) to be used must be:

Instructions

  • All diagrams and instructions shall depict the LP gas hose assembly and the manifold as one preassembled part from the factory

  • Instructions on how to connect and disconnect the LP gas supply cylinder(s) and the proper procedure for leak checking the connections

  • When the outdoor cooking gas appliance is equipped with a No. 600 Connection (1 lb tank), a statement which specifies that the cylinder be disconnected when the outdoor cooking gas appliance is not in use

  • If a No. 600 Connection (1 lb tank) is used, a statement that only cylinders marked “propane” must be used

  • If the outdoor cooking gas appliance is not in use, the gas must be turned off at the supply cylinder(s). Storage of an outdoor cooking gas appliance indoors is permissible only if the cylinder(s) is (are) disconnected and removed from the outdoor cooking gas appliance

  • Cylinders must be stored outdoors out of the reach of children and must not be stored in a building, garage, or any other enclosed area

  • A statement that the pressure regulator and hose assembly supplied with the outdoor cooking gas appliance must be used. Replacement pressure regulators and hose assemblies must be those specified by the outdoor cooking gas appliance manufacturer

  • Diagrams illustrating the LP gas cylinder valve connection device that will properly and safely mate with the connection device attached to the inlet of the pressure regulator supplied with the outdoor cooking gas appliance

  • Instructions, including illustrations, on the proper cylinder orientation to provide vapor withdrawal

  • A statement that the cylinder used must include a collar to protect the cylinder valve

  • A statement that includes:

  • Are all statements available?

  • A statement, “Place dust cap on cylinder valve outlet whenever the cylinder is not in use. Only install the type of dust cap on the cylinder valve outlet that is provided with the cylinder valve. Other types of caps or plugs may result in leakage of propane.”

  • A statement and accompanying illustration that indicates that the cylinder face elastomeric face seal element on these devices could, over time, show marked and visible damage or deterioration that might cause a leak even with the connection tightened; a statement that a visual inspection for the seal must be carried out every time a LP gas cylinder is replace or refilled; and a statement that any LPgas cylinder showing signs of damage or deterioration as those illustrated including visible cracks and pitting, must be returned unused to the seller

Built In Appliances

  • A statement as follows:

  • Instructions for proper construction of the built in enclosure, including the minimum height, width, and depth of the enclosure in integral inches

  • Instructions for the proper selection of noncombustible or combustible materials for the built in enclosure, as applicable

  • A statement that the appliance is only for installation in a built in enclosure constructed of noncombustible materials

  • If applicable, instructions to install the appliance within an insulating jacket provided by the manufacturer (Part No.) that provides for zero clearance installation within a built in enclosure constructed of combustible material

  • If provided, instructions for the installation of an LP cylinder enclosure within the built in enclosure

  • If applicable, detailed instructions and diagrams (if required for clarity) outlining the construction requirements for an LP cylinder enclosure

  • If applicable, instructions for the installation of the LP gas supply cylinder mounting and retention means

Electrical

  • If separate electrical equipment has been approved by a nationally recognized testing agency for use with the appliance, all electrical equipment instructions shall be included with the manual in their original or duplicated form from the manufacturer

  • All electrical equipment instructions must include the following:
