Mixed material is loaded on to the in-feed conveyor with a loader from where it is control fed to the bounce conveyors. The bounce conveyors separate the paper from the bottles and cans.

The paper mix is then conveyed to the screen drum trommel which removes fine particles including glass, plastic and dirt and delivers it to a bin under the screen. The paper is conveyed from the screen drum trommel and passes a picking station to allow plastic film or other unwanted waste to be removed by hand from the mix. Paper is then delivered to the paper bunker where it will be fed into the baler for automatic bailing.

The mixed waste stream (bottles, cans, etc) passes from the bottom side of the bounce conveyors to the to MRF plant infeed conveyor via C6, C7 and C8.

  • Open plant operation and control

  • Plant operation and control

The plant is operated from a control panel located adjacent to C7. There are two modes of operation:
    1. AUTO mode is the normal mode of operation for use when processing material. When using this mode of operation items of plant will start automatically, according to the programmed sequence.
    2. MANUAL mode is used for test running single items of plant when maintenance duties are being carried out. DO NOT use this mode of operation while processing material through the plant as no interlocking or control mechanisms are operational.

To switch between AUTO and MANUAL modes a switch is located on the main control panel.

Power to the plant must be isolated prior to maintenance of any item of plant using the main isolator and motor isolators.

  • AUTO mode - sequence start

    1. Ensure plant is clear of any person in potential danger from moving machinery.
    2. Turn Man/AUTO switch to AUTO
    3. Press 'Sequence start'

A loud alarm will ring to indicate the plant is about to start in the following order:
    1. C8 | 2. C7 | 3. C6 | 4. C9 | 5. C5 | 6. Trommel | 7. C4 | 8. C3R | 9. C3L | 10. C2 | 11. C1

While running, if any item of the plant is stopped all of the items of the plant will be stopped. Restart can be achieved by pushing sequence start. Items of plant may stop because of: current overload; emergency stop being pushed; sequence stop being pushed.

  • Open conveyors

  • Conveyors

Nip points hazard from moving belt with potential at rollers, return idlers and side skirts for personal injury.

Fire hazard from belt tracking off centre. If belts wears against frame for an extended period heat will be generated which may cause a fire.

Ensure conveyor is operated with tail, idler and side skirt guards in place.

Guards to be removed only when conveyor is isolated from power.

Guards to be removed by the Ganger or as determined by the Ganger.

Ensure belt is tracking online before loading with material.

  • Open conveyor belt tensioning

  • Conveyor belt tensioning

    Belt location at head roller

Belt tracking for belt location is achieved by packing under the head pulley bearings. This is done when the conveyor is manufactured. If adjustment is required follow the following guidelines:
    1. To move the belt to the left, pack under the left hand side (LHS) bearing block.
    2. To move the belt to the right, pack under the right hand side.
    3. Packers should provide equivalent support to the original bearing housing, otherwise the bearing housing may become overstressed and fracture.

Belt location at the tail pulley

Belt tracking for belt location is achieved by adjusting the tail roller belt tensioners. If adjustment is required follow the following guidelines:
    1. To move the belt to the left, either extend the RHS tensioner or retract the LHS tensioner.
    2. To move the belt to the right, either extend the LHS tensioner or retract the RHS tensioner.

The choice as to extend or retract the opposite side tensioner is subject to the belt tension. Belt tension should:
be set evenly across the belt width
provide consistent drive on the head roller
be firm to deflection when pushed by hand on the underside of the belt
not induce significant additional current draw from the motor

  • Open screen drum trommel

  • Screen drum trommel

Nip points hazard from moving drum with potential at support wheels and end travel wheel for personal injury.

Ensure trommel is operated with side and end guards in place.

Guards to be removed only when isolated from power.

Guards to be removed by the Ganger or as determined by the Ganger.

Pre-sort - P1 conveyor

P1 conveyor

  • In-feed conveyor

1200 mm wide flat belt with plate x 7300 mm conveyor system.

  • Last conveyor to start in auto sequence start mode.

  • P1 conveyor will stop and restart automatically. An auto stop will occur when the photo-electric eye in the chute ahead of the P1 is blocked by material, indicating excessive material being fed to the bounce conveyor. Once the beam is clear, P1 conveyor will automatically restart to allow continued feed of material to the plant.
