Guide for Assessment of Maneuvering Areas

• The Runway Assessment Form is divided into two sections. The first section gives an outline of the runway on the day of inspection. The second section deals with the available material for runway repair and maintenance. Combining the two sections will give the Facilities Manager a better understanding of requirements for this particular field. In both surveys, a figure 1 would be the lowest and 5 is the highest rating.

SURFACE CONDITION REPORTING

• 1. Aggregate Base showing greater than 70 %
  2. Gravel surface less than 2 cm (1”) deep with aggregate base showing 50% to 70%
  3. Gravel overlay 2 - 5 cm (2” to 3” deep) with aggregate base showing less than 50%
  4. Gravel overlay 5 cm 15 cm (3” to 6” )
  5. Runway surface 15 cm (6”) deep overlay project completed 1 – 5 years ago.
  

AGGREGATE STOCKPILE

• 1. Aggregate/gravel stockpile less that 3,000 cubic meters
  2. Aggregate/gravel stockpile 3,000 to 6,000 cubic meters
  3. Aggregate/gravel stockpile 6,000 to 9,000 cubic meters
  4. Aggregate/Gravel stockpile 9,000 to 12,000 cubic meters
  5. Aggregate/gravel stockpile 15,000 cubic meters (or more)
  

Instructions

• Visually inspect the portions of the runway (pre-Threshold/over-run area, runway, taxiway, apron, graded area, etc) and assign the appropriate rating for each reportable area. Estimate the available stockpile and assign the appropriate rating.
  
  The REMARKS section would be used to outline the general condition and aspect of the runway area. This would include comments like “summer work not completed” or, “stockpile remaining estimate 3 years”
