Introduction

  • This brief is designed to give all Engineers in North 01 a consistent process with regards to what jobs you are required to Escalate and who to Escalate to when you come across one of these instances or job types. Please save a copy of this PDF to i-Books on your iPad. Also download, readand sign the following audit on i-Auditor: North 01 Escalation Expectations and Procedure Then email the signed iAuditto your Line Manager. These procedures and Expectations have been put together by the North 01 management team and are being sent out to you all to make sure we have consistency across the whole region.

Escalation Expectation

  • As you mainly work alone, it is necessary to adhere to the following escalation procedures When you are undertaking “High Risk” work, this MUST be escalated to your manager before commencing and after completion. This will ensure that someone else knows where you are during this period of increased risk High Risk work that MUST be escalated includes: •Any work involving Roofs, •Any work being carried outwithWorking Practices as described in your Working Practice Manual •Any Working Practices you are carrying out that cannot be controlled by following the Ladder Hierarchy.

  • So basically, as per the Working Practices Manual you are required to escalate the following instances: •Flat roof Access •Pitched Roof Access •Loft Access •High level Eyebolt (where chest level cannot be used) •Any Ladder Setup where you are intending to work out with the Ladder Hierarchy •Before Drilling if you suspect there to be any hazardous substances (refer to Working Practices Manual) •Working in Dark of Fading Light (refer to Working Practices Manual)

Eye Bolts

  • The North 01 Management Team have made a decision on the following process. Please read and adhere to this process at all times. At all jobs where an Eye-Bolt is required, and in all instances a Chest Level Eye-Bolt must be used. This is the preferred method of securing your ladders and always used in the first instance. The only time you can ever use any additional item to secure your ladder is when it is impossible to install an Eye-Bolt due to the material of the building (never for cosmetic purposes) and after you have escalated the situation to a Team Manager to discuss the suitability of the additional securing point you’re intending to use.

Escalation Process

  • If you encounter any of the situations above you must follow the following process: •At first instance contact your Team manager. •If your Team Manager is off contact the buddy manager who is covering. •If you cannot contact either your Team Manager or Covering Manager call the other managers in your POD. •If you cannot contact a manager in your POD call the Managers from the other POD. •At any time you cannot contact any Team Manager you can call your Regional Manager •Last case scenario if an escalation is required and you cannot get in contact with any of the above you can contact our H&S Adviser.

Be Safe not Sorry

  • We have recently seen a spike in the number of cases where a breach of H&S has had to be investigated. This is one of the reasons for issuing this refresher guideline. As always, all instances of H&S incidents will be investigated and dealt with through the formal conduct policy. Please follow the Safe Working Practice procedure at all times and raise your awareness as we approach the winter.
