  • Full air pressure is obtained before moving off

Drive Off

  • Selects correct gear to avoid clutch shudder

  • Sounds horn before moving off

  • Checks mirror for hazards

  • Releases park brake

  • No acceleration applied on take off

  • Low revs maintained until normal operating temperatures are reached

  • Acceleration is smooth and progressive

  • Forward thrust is not felt during acceleration

Drive Vehicle

  • Gear changes made within operating range of engine

  • Clutch is used when making gear changes

  • Correct sequence is used when making gear changes

  • Obeys all speed restrictions ( built up areas and open roads )

  • Keeps revs low to minimise noise / emissions

  • All braking / slowing is done prior to entering corners and turns

  • Correct gear is selected prior to corners and turns ( to maintain power )

  • Auxiliary brakes are used to conserve brakes

  • Correct operation of power divider in off road / hazardous conditions

  • Good observation techniques are used ( front, rear and to the sides )

  • Both hands are used on the steering wheel

  • Correct use off signals and indicators

Monitor Conditions

  • Correct vehicle positioning is maintained on the road ( open roads / corners & turns )

  • Instruments and gauges are scanned at regular intervals

  • Correct following distance is maintained

  • Hazardous manoeuvres are planned in advance

  • Adjusts speed to suit varying road & environmental conditions

Conduct Water Truck Operations

  • Positions water tank correctly for ease of fill

  • Checks pumping equipment before filling tank

  • Operates pumping equipment to fill tank

  • Shuts down pumping equipment before departing

  • Operates ancillary equipment following company guidelines ( operation of PTO, spray bars, batter sprays etc. )

  • Considers environmental ( weather, traffic volume, road surface and grades etc. ) to determine appropriate speed of travel

Reverse Vehicle

  • Ensures area behind is clear

  • Positions vehicle correctly to allow ease of operation and good vision

  • Selects low gear to maintain control of vehicle

  • Sounds horn before reversing

  • Uses both mirrors to observe progress

  • Does not ride clutch while reversing

  • Park brake is applied

  • Transmission is placed in neutral position

  • Engine brake is turned off

  • Engine is not revved before shut down

  • Adequate time is allowed for the engine to idle / cool down
