Objective

  • The objectives of a safety leadership walk are to provide senior managers with:

    A first-hand view of current risks and challenges (with a focus on GMRs and SQE Risk Management)

    An opportunity to display positive HSE Behaviours across the following elements:

    ·       Setting high standards;

    ·       Communicating openly;

    ·       Confronting risk; and

    ·       Involving others

    An opportunity to promote positive HSE Behaviours to everyone, regardless of role

What to look for during your walk

  • The following check boxes provides some areas of focus that you may like to consider during your Safety Leadership Walk.  This list is by no means exhaustive and if you have identified an area of focus relevant to the respective workplace, please add into the observation section as required.

General items

  • Review GMR compliance levels and good practice

  • Identify GMR OFI

  • Review the most recent GMR self assessment and discuss what is identified

  • For all focus areas, ensure you identify positive behaviours as well as areas for improvement

  • Recognise and acknowledge good behaviour and address poor when seen

Planning high risk tasks

  • Review the AMS and TRA for the high risk task

  • Look at and discuss the planning process focusing on eliminating risk and implementing of hard controls

  • Talk to HSR , Supervisor and crews about the planning process and their level of involvement

  • Review start cards and speak with crew regarding controls in place

  • Consider if the GMR were adequately considered through the planning activity

  • What are the levels of compliance in the field?

Incidents

  • Review the status of any incidents on site

  • Speak with personnel involved

  • Discuss what was learned from recent events and how this was shared with the crew

Interaction with the work force

  • Ensure you take the opportunity to interact with the workforce

  • Attend a pre-start meeting

  • Attend a WHS committee meeting

  • Find ways to discuss the GMRs and discuss any trends that may be evident across the business and how it may translate to the workplace

HSR and consultation

  • Speak with HSR and understand level of support they are receiving

  • Check the effectiveness of the HSE committee

  • Speak with supervisors about the effectiveness of the relationship with the HSR
