Section Two: Inspection Results

Front Stiles? (These are the main sides of the steps) 1: Check for straightness. 2: Check for corrosion, rot or mould. 3: Check for splinters, holes, splits and impact damage. 4: Check for contamination by paint etc. which may hide any defects.

Back Legs? (These are the main sides of the steps) 1: Check for straightness. 2: Check for splinters, holes splits and impact damage. 3: Check for contamination by paint etc. which may hide any defects.

Treads? (These support the users weight & that of any tools/materials carried) 1: Check there are no missing treads, they are straight and free from any damage including corrosion. 2: Check all treads are secure. 3: Check there is no contamination including mud, grease, oil etc.

Hinges? (These allow stepladders to fold flat for ease of transportation & storage) 1: Check that all fixings are present and secure. 2: Check hinges for contamination and corrosion. 3: Check hinges are not distorted or bent & can open and close freely. 4; Check that any stops fitted work correctly.

Feet? (These provide friction between the stepladder and ground preventing slippage) 1: Check that all feet are present. 2: Check that all fixings are secure free from corrosion. 3: Check all feet for damage or wear & have adequate tread. 4: Check all feet are free from contamination i.e. mud, grease etc.

Locking Stay? (These form a tension brace between front stiles and back legs to stop them from moving apart) 1: Check that both lock stays are present. 2: Check for loose or worn fixings and pivots frayed or rotten ropes or webbing. 3: Check that both locking stays are equal in size.

Top Rail? (Supports the top of the stiles on the stepladder) 1: Check that the top rail is present. 2: Check for missing, loose corroded screws rivets. 3: Check for signs of corrosion or rot. 4: Check for signs of damage or any other damage that maybe present.

Platform? (These are fitted to the platform steps and typically made of alloy sheet and designed to support material/tools) 1: Check to make sure its not missing and all fixings are present and secure. 2: Check for splits and or twisted/bent or cracked platform decks. 3: Check for corrosion or if made of timber check for rot. 4: Check for contamination i.e. paint, oil etc. which could make the platform slippery or hide any defects.

Back Rails? (These are the horizontal members fitted at the back of the stepladders holding the back legs apart) 1: Check that all back rails are present. 2: Check that all fixings are present and secure. 3: Check they are not distorted or bent.

Struts? (Struts are the angled pieces of metal that cross between the horizontal & vertical parts of the steps (i.e. the rungs & stiles). 1: Check that all struts are present, firmly attached and secure. 2: Check for corrosion. 3: Check for splits, twisted/bent or any other damage.
