  • Permit boards present and showing correct permit number? (a board required at either end of the site)

  • Cones- (sufficient amount of cones? taper? sideways clearance? a cone next to signs?)

  • Is the length of the work site compliant?

SLG (traffic control)

  • Are work vehicles parked safely? (consider...are they obstructing the footway/ are they blocking other road users visibility)

  • Two-way working - are the Carriageway widths compliant? (standard: normal traffic including buses and HGVs 6.75m minimum)(restricted: cars and light vehicles only 5.5m minimum)

  • Shuttle working - are the carriageway widths compliant? ( standard: normal traffic including buses and HGVs 3.0m absolute minimum)(restricted: cars and light vehicles only 2.5m absolute minimum)

  • If Traffic lights are being used, are Stop and Go boards on site and readily available?

SLG (pedestrian control)

  • Has a safe route for pedestrians been established? (consider...the disabled, wheel chair access, visually impaired, push chairs, mobility scooters, the elderly)

  • Are barriers in place safeguarding residents leaving their property? (consider...front doors/ back doors/ front gates/ back gates/ driveways/ flats.)

  • if the work site is unmanned, do residents have safe access and egress to their property? (consider...walkways free from obstructions/ barriers not blocking access routes/ footway boards used to cover excavations)

  • Are Footway boards in place?

  • Has a minimum width in the footway been maintained? (absolute minimum 1m unobstructed width*, this includes barrier feet)

  • Footway closure- Are Pedestrian signs in place? ('Footway closed ahead', 'footway closed')

  • Excavation cover boards in place and fit for purpose?

  • Are Pedestrian footway ramps being used? (consider...are the correct ramps being used? and are they being used in a safe location?)

  • have existing dropped kerbs been used for alternative pedestrian access?

  • Walkway in carriageway - has a walkway with an absolute minimum width of 1m unobstructed been provided?

SLG (Barriers)

  • Are barriers clipped/ joined together?

  • Are barriers and signs adequately weighted?

  • Are barriers and signs in good condition and are they free from defects?

  • Are all materials stored within the barriers? (this includes; tarmac, excavated spoil, tools and equipment) (no over spill)

Use of plant, tools and Equipment

  • Has a safe working area been established? (consider...work area barriered off)

  • Excavator- is there a banksman? (does the banksman and persons working within the vicinity of the excavator have the correct PPE?)

  • Excavator- has the excavator been switched off prior to exiting the machine?

  • Cat and genny calibrated and fit for purpose?

  • Underground services - all identified and marked up with spray?

  • Is there evidence of trial holes?

  • Use of Stihl Saw or Floor saw- is there water suppression when in use? correct PPE worn by operative and persons within the vicinity? (ear defenders/ eye protection/FFP3 dust mask) machine turned off when not in use?

  • Wacker/ compaction plate- correct PPE worn? (ear defenders)

  • Overhead services - safety clearance zone established for grab lorries, excavators etc?

Welfare & Occupational Health

  • Are Suitable welfare facilities available ?

PPE

  • PPE - Mandatory PPE worn by all on site (minimum of long sleeve HI-VIZ top/ safety footwear) all other PPE requirements are task specific and can be found in the RAMs and site specific risk assessments.
