A. Hazard Communication

  • Correct signage on all entrances to the laboratory

  • Chemical bottles, solutions, and containers clearly marked and properly labeled with NO abbreviations

  • SDS sheets are on file and readily accessible

  • Equipment used for biohazardous materials is labeled

  • Chemical inventory is current, present in the lab, and on file with EHS

  • Empty cylinders are promptly removed from the lab

  • Proper segregation of full and empty cylinders

  • Cylinders are stored away from all heat sources such as flames, radiant heat, or burners

E. Chemical Storage

  • Flammable liquids are not stored in conventional refrigerators

  • Flammable liquids in excess of 10 gallons are stored in a flammable storage cabinet

  • Ether and any other highly flammable liquid is stored away from sources of light, heat, and direct sunlight

  • Incompatible chemicals are segregated (no water reactive chemicals are stored under the sink, flammables and oxidizers are separated, etc...)

  • Peroxide forming chemicals are dated upon receipt and disposed of properly

  • Outated, expired, or unknown chemicals are properly disposed of

  • All chemical containers are capped and sealed when not in active use

  • Hazardous chemicals are not stored above eye level, on top of refrigerators, or on the floor

F. Hazardous Waste

  • Waste containers are properly sealed and labeled

  • Secondary containment is provided for liquid waste

  • Secondary containment provided for tissue culture waste flask

  • Waste is separated by hazard class
