Accessing the Site

  • How will participants get to the site? Is there a vehicle at the site which can be accessed?

  • If yes what is the condition of the vehicle, how many number of seats does it have and will shuttle runs be needed?

  • Are there any other options for participants to get to and from the site?

Camp/Location Facilities

  • Is the location secure? Eg. Gated compound, locked, security guard. Are there any associated costs?

  • If the participants are staying onsite, is there lighting at night? Are blackouts common, if so is there a generator on site?

  • Do you have any concerns about the security of the site if participants are to stay there? If so, investigate suitable control measures. Eg. Team to stay in a hotel, valuables locked in a secure tin

  • Is the temperature comfortable or able to be controlled?

  • Are there any exposed wires near water sources, including showers and basins?

  • Are electrical/light switches in reasonable condition?

  • Is there, or is there likely to be, any building work going on at the site?

Participant Health

  • Is there a water source available and is it safe to drink?

  • Is the water source reliable? What about during dry seasons?

  • Is there enough water for drinking, washing and cooking?

  • Are there any potential other health issues present such as sewerage leaks, blocked amenities or spills?

  • Should participants come totally self sufficient or are there opportunities to top up supplies at a local store or somewhere appropriate?

  • Is the location hygienic for showering, eating and brushing teeth?

  • How and where is rubbish disposed of?

  • Is there any sign of harmful chemicals being used such as pesticides or rat poison?

  • Ask the project coordinator if asbestos is a potential issue?

  • Are there any unstable structures such as wooden buildings, rickety stairs, crumbling plaster, patches of damp or rotten beams?

Emergency and Evacuation

  • Are evacuation signage/maps present and able to be easily understood?

  • Is lighting adequate and operational?

  • Are access and egress paths clear?

  • Can exit doors be easily opened from the inside?

  • Is firefighting equipment present and easily accessible?

  • Are there any fire alarms or smoke alarms?

  • If stairs are present, are the treads in good condition?

  • Are hand rails present, safe and secure?

  • Are first aid kits available and the contents clean and within date?

  • Where is the nearest hospital or medical facility?

  • What is the best way to reach that facility and how long will it take?

  • If participants had to evacuate the local area due to a major emergency how would they best do this?

Local Risks

  • Are there any animals around the site including dogs, monkeys or snakes?

  • Ask the project coordinator about any animals, rodents or insects that might pose a problem. Are there any?

  • Are there any nearby areas that are not safe including busy roads, shops, prisons, waterfalls or other locations?

  • Besides the participants, is there anyone else on site during the day or at night time?

  • Ask the program coordinator if locals are often in the area especially in the evening or at night time?

Risk Analysis

  • Are there any other safety risks other than what has been asked and how may they be controlled?

  • In your opinion are there any risks to the health and safety of the participants?

  • In your opinion are there any risks to the reputation of the organisation?

  • Is this a safe and suitable location for staff and volunteers to stay at or should another option be sourced?
