Employee Obligations

  • Explain to the employee their legal obligations around work health and safety. Eg that all staff are responsible for safety and they have an obligation to report any unsafe behavior to their supervisor or the company Health and Safety Representative (HSR).

  • Explain to employee that there is a disciplinary system in place for continued poor or unacceptable performance. Depending on the severity of the incident an employee can be dismissed immediately or after 3 written warnings for continued poor or unacceptable performance.

  • Staff are to assist and follow all Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) protocols. Staff are encouraged to provide input where necessary for improvement of workplace and SWMS protocols.

  • Staff are to wear PPE on all site locations at all times. Note that some sites may vary their PPE requirements. It is the responsibility of the company to supply the necessary PPE. However, it is the responsibility of staff members to advise when their PPE needed to be replaced whether due to wear and tear; or loss or misplacement.

  • Staff are required to report any injury or unsafe incident, no matter how minor to either their supervisor or HSE representative.

  • Staff are encouraged and required to report any potential hazard to their supervisor or HSE Representative or cease work until the hazard has been eliminated or controlled.

  • Staff are required to attend work in the appropriate attire and be suitably attired at all times.

  • Staff are likely to work on various construction sites during their employment at CPS Concrete, this will mean that staff must complete specific site inductions where specified by our customers. Staff are to follow all site safety protocols as instructed during these inductions. Staff are also to be vigilant and pay strict attention when attending these inductions.

CPS workplace premises

  • Ensure staff have completed tour of workplace premises at Queanbeyan yard

  • Ensure staff are aware of locations of toilets, sinks, showers, kitchen etc

  • Ensure staff are aware of fire hose reel, extinguishers, fire blankets or any other fire safety device

  • Ensure staff are aware of emergency evacuation procedures including emergency warning devices and evacuation point.

  • Inform staff of location of First Aid Kits and list of First Aid providers

  • Show staff any workplace hazards and appropriate safety measures for each

  • Hours of work explained to staff member

  • Show staff where it is applicable for them to smoke, if they are smokers. Inform them that this is to be strictly adhered to.

  • Introduce new staff to other staff members

How to deal with hazardous substances

  • Show staff where hazardous substances are to be stored.

  • Ask why they think proper storage is important. Gauge their answers then if necessary explain why proper storage is important.

  • Show employees where the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) register is kept and show employee the register.

  • Ask employee to read a MSDS and explain the information contained on it.

Plant and Equipment

  • Discuss with staff plant and equipment used in the CPS workplace including plant and equipment that will be used on site

Concrete Vibrating Needle and Motor

  • Have staff explain to you the hazards in use of Concrete vibe needle and motor. If not satisfied with response, then discuss (including fumes when used in confined areas).

  • Show staff the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for this item.

  • Explain to staff member the process if item is in need of repair.

  • Discuss with and explain to the staff member the PPE that must be worn when using this item and stress the importance of this.

  • Have staff demonstrate the safe use of this item if they are required to use.

Hammer drill

Concrete Pump Truck

  • Have staff explain to you the hazards in use of the concrete pump truck if they hold a high risk license to operate this machine

  • Discuss with and explain to the staff member the PPE that must be worn when using this item and stress the importance of this.

  • Have staff explain to you the hazards when working in the vicinity of the concrete pump truck (this is for staff who do not hold an high risk operators license and may be working in the vicinity of the pump truck).

  • Discuss and explain to the staff member the PPE required to be worn when operating or working in the vicinity of the Concrete Pump Truck.

  • Discuss with staff member the emergency procedures in relation to the concrete pump truck.

  • Have staff explain and demonstrate the lock out procedures with the concrete pump truck.

General

  • Explain to staff importance of security of premises and company assets.

  • Explain probationary period to employee and include objectives and minimum standards required and date of review of employment.

  • Explain annual leave, personal leave and long service leave entitlements as well as hourly rate of pay for this employee.

  • Explain time sheet criteria, including it is the employees responsibility to ensure time sheets are given to supervisors each week to approve and give to payroll.

  • It is the nature of our work that we invariably work in outdoor areas in various weather conditions. Staff are to ensure they are appropriately attired for such conditions. PPE is supplied by CPS Concrete as is sunscreen and head gear. Staff are to ensure they suitably hydrate themselves especially in warmer weather.

  • Explain to staff required PPE. Have you issued staff member with required PPE?

  • Training needs analysis. What training is required for this staff member?

  • Staff member has been allocated keys to premises and equipment

Supervisory obligations and Checklists

  • It is essential that prior to each concrete pour a Pre Pour Checklist is completed by supervisor and this is understood by staff member.

  • It is essential that a Quality Assurance (QA) checklist is completed after each concrete pour and this is understood by staff member.

  • It is essential that the Pump Truck Operator completes a Pump Truck Setup checklist is completed prior to the setup of a pump truck. This is understood by the staff member.
