170.6 - PERMIT TO WORK - WORKING ALOFT OR OVER THE SIDE (7.1.1)Chip

  • Important:

    1. Personnel working at a height may not be able to give their full attention to the job and at the same time guard themselves against falling. Proper precautions must always be taken to ensure personal safety when work is done aloft or over the side. It must be remembered that the movement of the vessel in a seaway and extreme weather conditions, even when alongside, will add to the hazards involved in work of this type.
    2. Personnel under 18 years of age, or with less than 12 months’ experience at sea, shall not work aloft unless accompanied by an experienced person, or is otherwise adequately supervised.
    3. To ensure the safety of all personnel and crew onboard when attempting to work or inspect any area which is aloft or over the side of the vessel, the following permit will be adhered to.
    4. Other than in an emergency, personnel will not work over the side while the vessel is underway.
    5. Crew & contractors will be familiar with the relevant section of the “Code of Safe Working Practices before starting the task.

E. EXTENSION OF PERMIT TO WORK
