Cab check/engine start

  • Safety belt: not cut or frayed; securely mounted and latches properly

  • Emergency equipment: 3 red reflective triangles, properly secured charged and rated fire extinguisher, spare fuses or circuit breakers

  • Safe start: parking brake set, transmission in neutral, start engine and slowly release clutch

  • Temperature gauge: working and temp is beginning to climb

  • Oil pressure gauge: gauge is working and moves to proper operating pressure

  • Ammeter/voltmeter: gauge is working and alternator is charging. Warning light should go off

  • Air gauges: gauges are working and pressure is building to governor cut off between 120-140

  • Lighting indicators: 4-way flashers, L turn, R turn, high beams

  • Horn: both horns work properly, must have at least one that works

  • Heater/defroster: both work on all fan speeds, must feel vents

  • Mirrors: clean, not broken, adjusted properly from inside the cab

  • Windshield/windows: all glass is clean, no illegal stickers, no obstructions, side windows operate properly

  • Wipers/washers: arms and blades are secure, not damaged, work smoothly at all speeds. Washer operates properly

Air brakes check

  • Parking brakes: check one gauge at a time, 2nd gear, slow clutch,

  • Service brakes: parking brakes off, 2nd gear, 3-5 mph, clutch and brake, stop smoothly and not pull to one side or the other

  • Air brakes: shut truck off at 120psi. Depress brake, after initial loss, not drop more than 4psi in one minute. Pump down brakes fast, warning buzzer and light should come on at or just above 60. Continue until both buttons pop 20-40

Lights/reflectors

  • All lights: PMS, clean, working, correct color

  • Clearance lights: red in rear, amber everywhere else

  • Headlights: both high and low, properly adjusted

  • Tail lights

  • Turn signals

  • 4-way flashers

  • Brake lights

  • License plate light

  • Reflectors

  • DOT reflective tape

  • ABS lamp: should be OFF

Under the hood

  • Oil: indicate where the dip stick and fill tube are located, oil within safe operating range

  • Coolant: if engine is cool, remove the radiator cap and check that coolant is at least up to the bottom of the fill tube

  • Power steering fluid: indicate dip stick, above fill mark, direct drive or belt driven?

  • Water pump: properly mounted and secured (PMS) with no leaks, direct drive or belt driven?

  • Alternator: PMS, no missing or broken parts, wires secured with no frayed or bare areas, belts have no more than 3/4" of play, not cracked cut or frayed (CCF)

  • Air compressor: PMS, no broken or missing parts, not leaking, direct drive or belt driven?

  • Leaks/hoses: look for fluid on ground, look for dripping fluid on or under engine and transmission, inspect all hoses for tight fittings, not cracked damaged or leaking

  • Belts: all belts have no more than 3/4" of play, CCF

Steering

  • Steering: steering box PMS, no broken or missing parts, check hoses for tightness, cuts, leaks

  • Linkage: all connecting arms, links, and rods from steering box to the wheel are not cracked or worn, castle nuts secure with cotter pin. Joints and sockets are greased and not worn or loose, no missing nuts or bolts

Front wheels

  • Steer tires: MICED, valve stem PMS, no damage, secure cap, no leaks

  • Rims: inside and outside for any damage, dents, cracks, or welds

  • Lug nuts: all present and tight, not cracked or damaged, no wear marks, shiny threads, rust trails, no cracks or distortion sa round bolt holes

  • Hub oil/axle oil seals: not leaking, adequate oil visible thru sight glass

Front suspension

  • Springs: no missing, cracked, or shifted leaf springs

  • Shock absorbers: PMS to frame and axel, not bent damaged or leaking

  • U-bolts: check for cracks, looseness, and missing nuts

  • Spring mounts: no cracked or broken spring hangers, missing or damaged bushings, loose or missing bolts

Front brakes

  • Hose/lines/wires: not cracked, worn or leaking, couplings tight. No frayed or bare wires

  • Brake chamber: PMS, not leaking, no damage or missing parts, locking ring is securely in place. Push rod not broken and all pins are in place

  • Slack adjusters: PMS, no bent, broken p, or missing parts, no more than 1" of play with brakes released

  • drums/linings: drums PMS, no cracks, dents or holes. No contaminants, linings are not cracked or worn too thin

Side of tractor

  • Door/mirror: not damaged, no holes, opens and closes properly from outside Hinges secure and not rusted, seals in good shape. Fender and door mirrors and brackets PMS with no bent, broken, or damaged parts. All bolts are tight.

  • Fuel tanks: PMS, no damage or leaks. Check all lines and fittings, fuel cap is tight and locked in place

  • Steps and cat walk: PMS, clear of contaminants

  • Drive shaft: not cracked or bent, nothing wrapped around it. U-joints snug and working properly

  • Exhaust: check from engine all the way under can and hunk. PMS to support brackets, no signs of leak or damage. No rust or soot trails

  • Frame: not warped or twisted, no cracks, broken welds, holes, or other damage to frame and cross members

Drive wheels

  • Drive tires: Same as front, except they are duals, matched in size and style (not manufacturer), depth 2/32", no obstructions between tires

  • Rims: same as front, except they are Budd rims, will check inside and outside of both rims

  • Lug nuts: same as the front

  • Axle seals: axle bolts tight and not missing, seals are secure and not leaking

Rear suspension

  • Spring/airbags: not cracked shifted or missing, airbags no leaks or cuts

  • U-bolts: check for cracks, looseness, missing nuts

  • Shock absorbers: PMS to frame and axle, not bent damaged or leaking

  • Mounts: check all at each point where they are secured to frame and axle like I did up front

Rear brakes

  • Hose/lines like I did up front

  • Brake chamber like I did up front

  • Slack adjusters like I did up front

  • Drums and linings like I did up front

Rear of tractor

  • Splash guards/mud flaps: PMS with no damage

  • Air/electric lines: properly locked in place on tractor and trailer, not making contact with frame or catwalk, no cuts or leaks. Check seals and fittings, replace if necessary. No cuts, abrasions, or bare electrical wires

Coupling system

  • Mounting bolts: PMS, no loose or missing nuts or bolts or cracked welds

  • 5th wheel platform: PMS to frame or slide assembly with no damage

  • Locking jaws: using a flashlight, check that locking jaws are locked around the shank of the king pin

  • Release arm: in locked position

  • 5th wheel skid plate: properly greased, secure?

  • Slide 5th wheel pins: ?????

  • King pin: not bend or worn

  • Apron: not warped cracked or damaged

  • Gap: trailer is flat on skid plate with no visible gaps

Trailer fromt

  • Front of trailer should have no holes, cracks, or bulges

Side of trailer

  • Landing gear: PMS, no bent broken or missing parts, fully raised with crank handle stowed securely.

  • Trailer frame: no cracks, broken welds, missing rivets, or any other damage to frame, cross members, box, or floor of trailer

  • Sliding tandems: release arm in locked position, all pins are locked in place

Trailer wheels

  • Trailer tires: like I checked the drive tires

  • Rims: just like I did on the drive wheels

  • Lug nuts: just like I did up front

  • Axle seals: not leaking, adequate oil if sight glass

Trailer suspension system

  • Springs airbags and shocks like I did up front

  • U-bolts like I did up front

  • Torsion bars? Torque arms? PMS no damage

Trailer brakes

  • Brake lines like I did up front

  • Brake chamber like I did up front

  • Slack adjusters and push rod like I did up front

  • Drums and linings like I did up front

Rear of trailer

  • Doors/ties: all hinges are good, door opens and closes properly, seals intact, door ties are secure,

  • Splash guards/mud flaps: PMS with no damage
