External/Access

  • 1.0 Is external access to the store controlled by a suitable system to prevent public access whist work is taking place and allow emergency escape ?

  • Access to the store should restricted . External doors should be closed when not in use to prevent access from customers, colleagues or members of the public. Ease of escape should be considered in the event of an emergency with fire exits unlocked.

  • 1.1 Are all materials stored within the confines of the work area and not left outside ?

  • Ensure all materials and waste are suitably stored within the store.

  • 1.2 Is delivery of materials / equipment or removal of waste being managed effectively?

  • Any deliveries / removals that take place on the high street, in a public area or operational area should be supervised and controlled . Waste should be appropriately stored and removed from site and not left with the store to deal with.

H&S

  • 2.0 Can operatives demonstrate competence ?

  • Every operative must be able to prove their basic H&S competence. This can be through the use of CSCS cards CCNSG Cards, SPA Passport or other passport schemes.

  • 2.1 Is there a first aider who hold a 3 Day - First Aid at Work certificate?

  • Someone on site should hold a 3 day first aid at work certificate.

  • 2.2 Are the first aid supplies suitable and sufficient for the work taking place?

  • As a minimum: 10 person kit including eye wash. Under no circumstances should medicines be stored in the box, and that all items are in date. This can not be the stores kit

  • 2.3 Are operatives aware of fire evacuation and other emergency procedures ?

  • Operatives should know what to do in an event of a fire, fire extinguisher locations and location of first aid box

  • 2.5 Are operatives on site wearing appropriate PPE for the activity taking place? ( hi vis vests, safety boots, suitable gloves and eye protection should be available )

  • Safety boots should be worn at all times and other task specific PPE should be worn when necessary , check against rams

  • 2.6 Are Portable Appliances (equipment and extension leads) 110v, in a safe condition and been subject to regular inspection?

  • This can be PAT or weekly, recorded visual inspections. Check items for damage wear and tear etc

Housekeeping

  • 3.1 Is there adequate lighting in all work areas including task lighting?

  • Are store lights bright enough for the work taking place?

  • 3.2 Are walkways clear and free from debris and materials?

  • There should be clear access around working areas that are free from obstructions.

  • 3.4 Are all materials stored / stacked correctly?

  • Materials should be stored in a way that to prevent damage, materials falling or slips trips and falls. This includes the storing of materials on working at height equipment.

  • 3.5 Is work being carried out in an organised controlled manner?

  • Equipment, materials and rubbish should be organised and stored in a way to work efficiently and avoid health and safety risks. Operatives should be working effectively together to achieve the task within the timeframes

Work at Height

Step Ladders

  • 5.0 Are step ladders being used?

  • 5.2 Is the ladder free from visible damage?

  • Check the ladder and look for missing feet, damaged rungs or a broken locking mechanism

  • 5.3 Do the steps comply to British Standard (BS) Class 1 ‘Industrial’ (Max Load 175kg) or BS EN 131 for Commercial Use (Max Load 150 Kg)

  • Check the ladder is suitable , coloured stickers may highlight the class with blue class one and green class two

  • 5.4 Are operatives using the stepladders safely?

  • If operatives are not using the stepladder safely, please explain why and add photographs if possible. This could include but is not limited to, overreaching, facing away from the rungs, working on the top three rungs, or using ad hoc devices such as bricks to level the ladder.

Other Work at Height Methods

  • Operatives on working at height must be doing so in a safe way with consideration for themselves and others around them.

Welfare

  • If smoking or vaping is taking place, is this being done in a suitable location and managed appropriately ?

  • Smoking area must be away from the public, combustible / flammable materials & sources of ignition. Butts should be disposed of safely and the store should remain secure whilst this activity takes place i.e doors not just left open.

Environmental

Noise and Light

  • Is work being conducted in a manner to reduce noise?

  • No drilling , cutting should take place out side during overnight works, conversations should be conducted indoors

10. Documentation

Asbestos

  • 10.1 If the building is Pre-2000, do operatives have asbestos awareness certificates ?

  • Asbestos awareness training MUST be UKATA or IATP accredited.

Risk Control

  • 10.3 Are there suitable and sufficient Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMs) on site for contractors?

  • 10.4 Have all the operatives involved signed and dated the RAMs or acknowledgement forms to indicate their acceptance and understanding of them?
