1.0 Guidelines

  • 1.1 If possible obtain the procedure for the thank being observed e.g. JSA, SOP, Safe Work Method Statement or Pre-Work.

  • 1.2 Observe and when safe to do so, get the employee/s attention

  • 1.3 Ensure that you acknowledge employees safe practices and consider the following:

  • -has the employee read and understood the task procedures

  • -are they following the task procedure?

  • -correct PPE for the task

  • -have the received instruction on PPE?

  • -are employees using correct manual handling techniques?

  • 1.4 Explain to the employee/s the consequences of doing the task unsafely, safer ways to do the job?

  • 1.5 Get the employees agreement to work safely in the future.

  • 1.6 Any other safety issues on site?

  • 1.7 Thank the employee for his/her time.

2.0 Safety Observation

  • 2.1 Personal protective equipment (Safe condition/Unsafe condition)

  • 2.2 Working positions of people (Safe practice/Unsafe practice/unsafe behavior)

  • 3.1 Have manual handling risks associated with this task been assessed? (note: this is required if the task involves over reaching, twisting, awkward positions, significant pushing or pulling, repetitive, heavy loading or significant exertion)

  • 3.2 Has the employee been inducted into the site?

  • 3.3 Has the employee been given appropriate information, instruction & supervision?

  • 3.4 Does the employee feel that they require any additional training to perform their duties safely?

  • 3.5 Can the employee explain their safety responsibilities and accountabilities?

  • 3.6 Can the employee explain the incident/injury procedure?

  • 3.7 Can the employee explain what to do if an environmental spill occurred?
