Orchard

  • Check that required picking documents are on site or available and confirm the the area being picked is correct.

  • Record as a "No" if any of the following is not available - orchard map (record date on map) and all hazards and required areas are listed (variety blocks , water sources, toilets etc,) , Clearance to Pick form, Printed bin cards and that area being picked is correct . Note - if there are concerns that the wrong area is being picked immediately contact the Harvest Co-ordinator.

  • Load Out Area *

  • Check area is clean and tidy, free of rubbish etc. Pests and weeds are under control. Traffic management plan need to be available if loading on a public road.

  • Orchard Structures

  • Visual check of canopy, no broken structures and are well maintained.

  • Orchard Tracks

  • Visual check , well maintained - no mud evident. ruts , water damage etc. Pay attention to condition of sloping tracks.

  • Parking

  • Visual check that designated parking area has been proved.

  • Orchard Access

  • Visual check condition of driveways, suitable for sizes of vehicles to be received ( wide enough enough), no obstacles

Health & Safety

  • Site Induction completed

  • Record orchard induction has been completed (Pre-start) include names of everyone on site, first aider listed, main hazards identified etc.

  • First aider & first aid kit

  • Confirm First Aid person is on site and First Aid available.

  • Tractor speed is safe and controlled to avoid accidents

  • Check speed of tractors is not excessive and unsafe

  • No riding in bin trailers

  • Visual check that no one is riding on the bins when transported (either full or empty)

  • Helmets on ATV's

  • Checks drivers of ATV's are wearing a helmet.

  • Vehicles driving with due care

  • Check driving practices of vehicles on sites, report any unsafe practices e.g. not slowing when going through hedging/fence openings, speeding , near misses etc.

  • Health and Safety signs in place

  • All required signs are in place e.g. machinery movement, harvest in progress etc.

Food Safety

  • Hygiene requirements addressed

  • Check following: no obvious uncovered cuts/abrasions on pickers, no blood on product, no evidence of smoking or eating by pickers and tractor drivers in harvest area.

  • Hand washing

  • Check pickers are washing and/or sanitising their hands at start of work, after breaks after using the toilet.

  • Toilet Facilities (Must be Flushing or Portaloo)

  • Check toilet facilities, record type of toilet e.g. portaloo etc. Check hand washing ( water, soap & drying) and/or hand sanitising facilities available.

  • Staff Breaks

  • Check that area has been provided for pickers to use in their breaks (includes under vines in harvested areas only) and potable drinking water is available.

  • Animals on the orchard during picking

  • Look for evidence of animals on the orchard at the time of harvest , score pass if no animals seen.

  • Are the bins provided in a satisfactory condition?

  • Check bins , record as a fail if evidence of damage is seen that could contaminate the fruit ( i.e. protruding nails, broken wood) also check cleanliness of bins and record as a fail if dirty or previous pick debris still in the bin.
