Site Visit Guidance

• The purpose is visibility and clear demonstration of interest - NOT inspection/audit
• Begin by introducing yourself, explain your role and why you are here
• Ask to be shown all aspects of the operation by the people who do the work - NOT just the officers
• Try and talk to as many people on the vessel as possible
• Ask for explanation of What they do, How they do it, When, Who etc.
• Do they understand the risks involved, to them, to the environment, to others?
• Listen twice as much as you talk
• Stay focused on health, safety, environmental protection and security
• Close by thanking all involved
• Attend any toolbox talks going on

Observation Tips - Look for the following

• Hazards - recognised, analysed, controls in place, recovery possible?
• Health - noise, ventilation, fumes, germs, heat, strains

• Contractors - managed, controlled, supervised, involved, skilled, aware of risks
• Resources - sufficient, appropriate, maintained, competent
• Supervision - present, aware, respected, knowledgeable, effective
• Systems - permit to work, risk assessments, working at height, confined space, lifting, welding, grinding. Isolations appropriate.
