Management Site Visit Guidelines

  • If carrying out a Management Site Visit use the following Guidelines

    Decide - what to look at
    Observe - the work
    Introduce - yourself
    Explain - why you are here
    Ask - what is the job?
    Praise - things done well
    Explore - what might go wrong?
    Find Out - why?
    What - should be done differently?

Site Visit Guidance

  • • The purpose is visibility and clear demonstration of interest - NOT inspection/audit
    • Begin by introducing yourself, explain your role and why you are here
    • Ask to be shown all aspects of the operation by the people who do the work - NOT just the officers
    • Try and talk to as many people on the vessel as possible
    • Ask for explanation of What they do, How they do it, When, Who etc.
    • Do they understand the risks involved, to them, to the environment, to others?
    • Listen twice as much as you talk
    • Stay focused on health, safety, environmental protection and security
    • Close by thanking all involved
    • Attend any toolbox talks going on

Observation Tips - Look for the following

  • • Hazards - recognised, analysed, controls in place, recovery possible?
    • Health - noise, ventilation, fumes, germs, heat, strains
    • Environment - chemicals, waste, leakage, exhaust, resource efficiency
    • Contractors - managed, controlled, supervised, involved, skilled, aware of risks
    • Resources - sufficient, appropriate, maintained, competent
    • Supervision - present, aware, respected, knowledgeable, effective
    • Systems - permit to work, risk assessments, working at height, confined space, lifting, welding, grinding. Isolations appropriate.
    • Tools - sufficient, maintained, secured, certified
