Meal Preparation

  • Is the whiteboard updated with today's meal choices?

  • Were residents prompted/supported to have their hands wiped before the meal?

  • Are risk assessments followed and is the food cut up to the correct size as stated in the risk assessment?

  • Were residents offered choice (visually)?

  • Were people encouraged to eat and drink as independently as possible, but given support as required?

  • Were people helped to eat and drink with tact and dignity? (with staff sitting next to them and not standing over them)

  • Did staff talk to residents and/or was staff-to-staff conversation appropriate?

  • Did everybody have a drink and are they offered more?

  • Does the meal experience appear dignified?

  • Were residents offered extra portions?

  • Did staff ask residents if they were enjoying their meal?

  • Did the staff know about individual people’s preferences and were they catered for

  • Is the pace of the meal served appropriate?

  • Are people rushed through their meals?

  • Are staff able to determine when people have eaten enough, cold food removed and dessert offered?

  • Is there an appropriate gap between main and dessert?

  • Are the empty plates cleared away in good time?

  • Is there a lot of food being returned to the kitchen?

  • Have alternatives been offered?
