Answer Investigative Questions to Analyze Available Information

  • The investigative questions below are designed to assist a Threat Assessment Team with the final section of this tool

  • 1. What is the person’s motive(s) and goal(s)? What motivated the behavior(s) that have raised concern about potential violence?

  • 2. Has there been any communication suggesting ideas or intent to engage in violence?

  • 3. Has the person engaged in attack-related behaviors (i.e., any behavior that moves an idea of harm forward toward actual harm)?

  • 4. Does the person have the capacity to carry out an act of targeted violence?

  • 5. Is the person experiencing hopelessness, desperation, and/or despair?’

  • 6. Does the person have a trusting relationship with at least one meaningful person (e.g., a teacher, family member, coach, counselor, advisor, etc)?

  • 7. Does the person view violence as an acceptable, desirable, or the only way to solve problems?

  • 8. Is the person’s conversation and "story" consistent with his or her actions?

  • 11. Are other people concerned about the person’s potential for violence?

  • 10. What circumstances might affect the likelihood the person may decide to engage in violence or resort to violence – either increase the likelihood or decrease it?

Make the Assessment

  • The Threat Assessment Team should review and discuss the responses obtained above. Using that information, the Team should then answer the two assessment questions below.

  • Is the threat transient? No sustained intent to harm.

  • If “YES” – then complete A, B, and C below and do not answer Assessment Question 2

  • C. If applicable, provide the subject/subject’s family with and document appropriate mental health / support referrals here:
