Surfacing

  • Is there adequate protective surfacing under and around the playground?

  • Have any of the loose-fill surfacing material been displaced under heavy use areas such as under swings or slides?

  • Has surface material deteriorated?

  • Do loose fill surfacing materials have any foreign debris, such as pine cones or sticks?

  • Are loose-fill surfacing materials compacted?

  • Is there excessive fill material outside the playground area?

  • Are the mats under the swings or at slide exits displaced or able to cause a tripping hazard?

Drainage

  • Does the entire play area have satisfactory drainage, especially in hearty use areas such as under swings and slide exits?

  • Is there any standing water in or around playground, weather it be from rain or irrigation?

General Hazards

  • Are there any sharp points, corners or edges on the equipment?

  • Are there any missing or damaged protective caps or plugs?

  • Are there any hazardous protrusions?

  • Are there any potential clothing entanglement hazards, such as an S-hook or protruding bolts?

  • Are there any crush or shear points on exposed moving parts, such as swings or sway bridges?

  • Are there any trip hazards, such as exposed footings or anchoring devises and rocks, roots, or any other obstacles in a use zone?

Security Hardware

  • Are there any loose fastening devises or worn connections?

  • Are there any moving parts, such as swing hangers, marry-go-round bearings, and track rides that are worn?

Durability of Equipment

  • Is there any rust, rot, cracks, or spinsters on any of the equipment (check carefully where the components come in contact with the ground)

  • Is there any broken or missing components on any of the equipment ( e.g. handrails, guardrails, protective barriers, steps, or rungs?

  • Is there any damage to the fences, benches, labels, or signs on the playground?

  • Is all equipment securely anchored?

Leaded Paint

  • Paint (especially lead paint) is it peeling, cracking, chipping, or chalking?

  • Is there any visible lead paint chips or accumulation of lead dust?

General Upkeep of Playgrounds

  • Are there any user modifications to the equipment, such as strings, ropes tied to equipment, swings looped over top rails, etc.?

  • Is the entire playground free of debris or litter such as tree branches, soda cans, bottles, glass, etc.?

  • Are there any missing trash receptacles?

  • Are any trash receptacles full or overflowing?

  • Is there any vandalism or graffiti in or around playground area?
